BMW Installation Instructions

This upgrade enhances the technical status of the Phase V telephone/mobile phone to Phase V Plus.

Installation time approx. 0.75 hours (E38, E39 Saloon only).

Installation time approx. 1.25 hours (E39/2 only).

These installation times only cover the upgrade of cars with an existing telephone/mobile phone.

The times for replacing additional components are shown in the current work instruction documents. For the upgrade in conjunction with retrofitting a telephone/mobile phone, the installation time is approx. 0.25 hours.

! The illustrations show the installation of the adapter cable for cars with an eject box. Proceed accordingly for cars with a telephone console. For retrofitted cars with a telephone on a console, the 18-pin socket casing at the rear under the centre console must be tied back. The interface is on the propeller shaft tunnel on the left-hand side of the carpet joint.<-

1 Overview of adapter cable A

Disconnect the br./wt. cable, pin 3, from the 12-pin socket casing of the tele./mobile phone connection wiring harness on the left-hand side of the boot and connect it to the red cable, pin 1

1.1 Upgrade in conjunction with retrofitting a telephone/mobile phone

All cars

Before installing the adapter cable, the existing cabling on the 18-pin socket casing (3) X4545 is to be checked.

To do this, take apart the 18-pin socket casing (3) X4545 and check the plug interior (4), slot No. 10, to see whether it has a brown/white cable.

E39 and E39/2 without existing cabling at slot No. 10 only

E39 and E39/2 with existing cabling at slot No. 10 only

To supply power to slot No. 10 on the 18-pin socket casing X4545, proceed as follows on the 12-pin plug connector X400 (3) at the rear left- hand side of the boot.

  • Cut off the 12-pin plug connector (3).
  • Disconnect the socket contact, slot No. 3, cable colour brown/white, on the 12-pin socket casing (4) and cut off the contact section.
  • Connect the cable (5) you have cut off to the red cable, slot No. 1 using the enclosed insulationpiercing connector (2).

The adapter cable is not required.

Reassemble the car in reverse order.

losed socket casing (1). Connect branch A2, pin contact, to the socket contact (6) you have pressed out.

  • Connect branch A1, socket contact, to the empty slot No. 2 in the 3-pin white socket casing (7) X531.
  • Take apart the 18-pin socket casing (4) X4545.
  • Connect branch A3, socket contact, to the empty slot No. 10 on the plug interior (5).

Reassemble the car in reverse order.

E38 with existing cabling at slot No. 10 only

To supply power to slot No. 10 on the 18-pin socket casing X4545, proceed as follows on the 12-pin plug connector X400 (3) at the rear left- hand side of the boot.

  • Cut off the 12-pin plug connector (3).
  • Disconnect the socket contact, slot No. 3, cable colour brown/white, on the 12-pin socket casing (4) and cut off the contact section.
  • Connect the cable (5) you have cut off to the red cable, slot No. 1 using the enclosed insulationpiercing connector (2).

The adapter cable is not required.

Reassemble the car in reverse order.

Remove the wooden cover on the centre console at the front.

Lay adapter cable A from the 3-pin white plug (3) X53 along the vehicle wiring harness to the installation site of the 18-pin socket casing (4) X4545 in the centre console at the rear, as shown in the illustration, and connect it up as follows:

  • Cut off the 3-pin white plug connector (3) X531.
  • Press the existing socket contact (6), cable colour red/black/yellow, out of the 3-pin white socket casing (7) X531, slot No. 2, and connect the enc

E38 without existing cabling at slot No. 10 only

1.2 Upgrade for cars with an existing telephone/mobile phone

Remove the wooden cover (4) on the centre console at the front.

Lay adapter cable A from the 3-pin white plug (3) X53 along the vehicle wiring harness to the installation site of the 18-pin socket casing (8) X4545 in the centre console at the rear, as shown in the illustration, and connect it up as follows:

  • Cut off the 3-pin white plug connector (3) X531.
  • Press the existing socket contact (5), cable colour red/black/yellow, out of the 3-pin white socket casing (6) X531, slot No. 2, and connect the enclosed socket casing (1). Connect branch A2, pin contact, to the socket contact (5) you have pressed out.
  • Connect branch A1, socket contact, to the empty slot No. 2 in the 3-pin white socket casing (6) X531.
  • Take apart the 18-pin socket casing (8) X4545.
  • Connect branch A3, socket contact, to the empty slot No. 10 on the plug interior (7).

Reassemble the car in reverse order.

! Before starting the upgrade, some existing components in the car must be checked to see whether they can continue in use (see EPC).

The following components must be checked:

  • SE unit

(Rear left-hand side of the boot)

  • Interface

(Under the slide unit in the centre console)*

On cars with a mobile phone, the electronic charger (rear left-hand side of the boot) does not need to be checked.
