1.Important information

The installation time is approx. 1.5 hours, but may vary depending on the condition of the car and the equipment in it.

BMW cannot accept any liability for damage caused by ignoring the work and the instructions set out in this document. In addition, if the accessory part is not installed and handled properly as set out in these installation instructions, no claims under the guarantee will be accepted by BMW AG.

Installation instructions

The accessory front apron should be installed by two people. Lever out the cover for the towing eye, remove the tape from the standard bumper and prepare it for painting.

Some of the installation work for the accessory front apron is shown on one side of the car.The work is to be carried out the other way round on the other side of the car.

Safety instructions

It is essential to ensure that any mechanical work or painting does not destroy the marking in the front apron or render it illegible.The marking is located on the inside on the right-hand side.

Place the accessory rear apron against the vehicle before painting it, check that it fits and adjust it slightly if necessary.The front fog lights for the BMW 3 Series Coupé (46/2) are required for the installation of the accessory front apron. See instructions in the EPC.

For cars without fog lights as standard, the front fog lights / rear fog lights switch and front fog lights / rear fog lights relay is also required. See instructions in the EPC.

Cars with headlight cleaning system only

Before painting, the cut-outs for the headlight cleaning system are to be fitted in the accessory front apron (see section 2, Installation, Figure A).

Painting instructions

The front apron is supplied ready-primed and must undergo the appropriate pre-treatment. In addition the cover for the towing eye on the standard bumper must also be painted. Refer to the BMW painting instructions.

Procedures

The front apron is made of PUR -G F15.

Paint it using BMW acrylic paint +30% softface additive. Maximum temperature for stoving 40°C.

Depending on the equipment in the car, the following parts must be ordered in addition to the parts kit for the accessory front apron.

All cars

Fog lights for the BMW 3 Series Coupé (E46/2). See instructions in the EPC.

Cars without fog lights as standard only

Front fog lights / rear fog light switch and front fog lights / rear fog light relay. See instructions in the EPC.

2. Installation

Notes

Refer to the safety instructions in section 1.

Preparations

Remove the front wheel arch trims.

Remove the standard front apron using repair manual No. 51 11 000.

A

Cars with headlight cleaning system only

The cut-outs for the headlight cleaning system are marked on the inside of the accessory front apron. Cut the cut-outs (1) out of the accessory front apron (a) before painting it.

Remove the securing pins from the expanding rivets (3) and lever out the expanding rivets (3).Take the aluminium support (2) out of the standard front apron. Place the aluminium support (2) into the accessory front apron (a) and secure it with the expanding rivets (3).

If necessary use the new expanding rivets (3) from the parts kit.

Cars with headlight cleaning system only

Remove the headlight cleaning system out of the standard front apron. Insert the spray jets (4) into the recess (5) in the accessory front apron (a) and secure them with the adapters (6) and hexagonal nuts (7). Connect the hose (8) to the spray jet (4).

Different spray jets are used for the left and right sides. See the part numbers.

Place the ornamental grille (c) on to the lugs (9) from the rear and secure it to the accessory front apron (a) using the sheet metal clips (d).

The ornamental grille (c) must be positioned in such a way that the alignment of the fins is visible from the front as shown in the magnified view.

Place the fog light (10) into the recesses in the accessory front apron (a). Secure the sheet metal bracket (i) to the aluminium support (11) using the hexagonal screws M5 (j), washers (k) and hexagonal nuts M5 (l). Bolt the fog light (10) to the sheet metal bracket (i) using the hexagonal screws M6 (m), washers (g), flange nuts M6 (h) and spacer (n).

Only one spacer (n) is required for each fog light (10).

Place the complete accessory front apron (a) into the side mountings on the car and position it. Secure the accessory front apron (a) on the impact absorbers (13) with the standard bolts (12).

Tightening torque = 42 Nm.

Check the spacing of the accessory front apron (a) from the body and adjust it if necessary. Desired spacing = 5 mm ± 0.5 mm.

Method for adjusting the gap between the accessory front apron (a) and the body:

Remove the accessory front apron (a) and adjust the spacer bushes (see arrows) in the impact absorber (15) accordingly using a 14 mm Allen key (14).

The adjustment can be made on both impact absorbers.

Place the accessory front apron (a) into the side mountings on the car and secure it (see Figure F ). Check the gap all along the apron and repeat the adjustment work if necessary.

Connect the fog light (16) to the standard plug (17) for the fog light using the adapter cable (o).

On cars without standard fog lights, the wiring harnesses for the fog lights are tied back.

Remove the side marking lights (18) from the standard front apron, connect them to the connection plug (19) and clip them into the recesses (20) in the accessory front apron (a).

Install the wheel arch trims. Bolt the accessory front apron (a) to the wheel arch trim (21) using the fillister head screws (f), washers (g), spacer bushes (e) and flange nuts (h).

Fit the temperature sensor (22) into the mounting in the accessory front apron (a).

The temperature sensor (22) is installed in different positions depending on whether the car is a 4 or 6 cylinder model.

Cars without standard fog lights only

Press the fog light relay (23) into the relay socket (24) on the power distributor.

M

Cars with standard fog lights only

Remove the switch for the rear fog lights (25) and replace it with the switch for the front fog lights / rear fog lights.

For further information on the installation of the fog lights, see the installation instructions entitled “Front fog lights for Z3 roaster”.

Clip the cover for the towing eye into the accessory front apron using the tape. Install the registration plate light and the registration plate in reverse order to their removal.

After completing the installation of the accessory front apron switch on the front fog lights.
