The specified installation time only refers to the installation and connection work for the wiring harnesses. The installation of the heating elements is identical to the work described in ”To replace the seat cover for the left or right front seat”.The work involved in this procedure must be charged separately and is to be taken from the customer service data.
For cars built before 09/99 without a switch centre the required module holder must be ordered separately (see EPC for order number). Ensure that you order the correct version.
The target group for these installation instructions are staff who have been trained on BMW cars with specialist knowledge of body electrical systems.
All servicing, repair and installation work on BMW cars is completed on your own responsibility.
All the work is to be completed with the help of current BMW
- Repair manuals,
- Circuit diagrams,
in a rational order using the specified tools (special tools) and in compliance with current health and safety regulations.
All the work is shown on a LHD model. Proceed in the same way on the opposite side on RHD cars.
This retrofit kit is not coding-relevant.
! Use the proper torque values for screw connections. The required torque values are shown in the Parts Information System (TIS).
Tools and equipment required
MoDiC or DIS
Set of straight slot screwdrivers

! Refer to the safety regulations for handling airbag modules and pyrotechnic belt tensioners, see HG-72.
Incorrect handling may result in the pyrotechnic belt tensioner or side airbag being deployed, which may cause injury.
Switch off the ignition.
The seats are a major part of the life-saving BMW restraint system. All repair and setting work on the seats should therefore be conducted with extreme care and attention.
The specified TIS AW numbers refer to the standard, manual front seats. Complete the appropriate procedures if the car has sports or electrical front seats.

4. To prepare the seats
! In no circumstances may the screw below the Torx screw for securing the backrest be undone. This will destroy the seat frame. Install the heating elements as described in the TIS.
Complete the following work on both seats: Install the connection cable (1) as shown and place it in the mountings (3).
Connect the plugs (2) for the heating elements.
Release the plug (1).
Insert the plug (2) for the heating elements.
Lock the plug (1) again.
5. To install the wiring harnesses
Connect the seat heating system wiring harness (1) into the plugs (2) X275 or X279 as follows:
A1 (3), green/violet cable, to PIN chamber 25
A2 (4), brown cable, to PIN chamber 24
A3 (5), white/green cable, to PIN chamber 23.
B1 (3), green/yellow cable, to PIN chamber 25
B2 (4), brown cable, to PIN chamber 24
B3 (5), white/blue cable, to PIN chamber 23.
Secure the seat heating system wiring harnesses (1) to the seat wiring harness (6) using insulating tape.
Pull back the carpet (1) below the driver’s seat. Lay the seat heating system wiring harness (2) along the side skirt to the front and then to the centre console.
Connect branch A4 (3), brown cable, into the joint connector (4) X173.
Pull back the carpet (1) below the passenger seat. Lay the seat heating system wiring harness (2) along the side skirt to the front and then to the centre console.
Connect branch B4 (3), brown cable, into the joint connector (4) X490.
If the car already has a switch centre, reconnect the connections of the wiring harness in the existing plug (1) X1869.
Connect the wiring harness into the plug (1) X1869 as follows:
A1.1, green/violet cable, in PIN chamber 13
A1.3, white/green cable, in PIN chamber 21 B1.1, green/yellow cable, in PIN chamber 1 B1.3, white/blue cable, in PIN chamber 20.
Push the switch centre (1) into the module holder (4) from the rear, lock it and secure it with the fillister head screws (2) supplied in the installation kit.
Connect the plug strips (3).
Install the module holder (4) again.
If there is no switch, remove the special equipment with the caps (1) supplied.
Release the fuse box A46 (3).
Undo the Torx screws (1). Release the locks in the recesses (2) with a small straight slot screwdriver. Remove the fuse box A46 (3) in the direction indicated by the arrow.
As you take out the fuse box A46 (3) the blade terminal fuses on the bottom row of slots will fall out.
Ensure that all the blade terminal fuses are reinserted in the appropriate slots.
Release the plug strips on the fuse holders. Connect branch (1) D, red/violet cable, to fuse slot F42 (2).
Connect branch (3) E, violet/blue cable, to fuse slot F12 (4).
Assemble the fuse box again.
Insert a 30 A blade terminal fuse into fuse slot F42 (2).
Insert a 7.5 A blade terminal fuse into fuse slot F12 (4).
Connect branch C, white/red/yellow cable, to joint connector X10116 (same colour).
