These installation instructions are only valid for cars without SA235 towing hitch.

Specialist knowledge required.

The installation time is approx. 1 hours but this may vary depending on the condition of the car and the equipment in it.

1. Important information on installing the CD changer in the E46/5

These installation instructions are primarily designed for use within the BMW dealership organisation and by authorised BMW service companies.

In any event the target group for these installation instructions is specialist personnel trained on BMW cars with the appropriate specialist knowledge.

All work must be completed using the latest repair manuals, circuit diagrams, servicing manuals and work instructions in a rational order using the prescribed tools (special tools) and observing current health and safety regulations.

On cars with Park Distance Control (PDC) the ultrasonic converters are to be taken off the trim and clipped into the same position in the accessory rear apron.

The accessory rear apron should be installed by two people.

Safety instructions

It is essential to ensure that mechanical work or painting work does not destroy the model plate or the embossing in the rear apron or render it illegible.

The model plate is embossed on the inside on the right-hand side.

Installation information

The accessory rear apron is supplied assembled for the painting work. The top support and the side reinforcements on the accessory rear apron are fastened loosely to their fastening journals on the accessory rear apron. All the other components for the accessory rear apron are supplied loose with the installation kit. Some of the installation work is shown on one side of the car only, proceed in exactly the same way on the other side.

Painting instructions

The accessory rear apron is supplied ready primed and requires no pre-treatment.

In addition the cover in the towing eyelet in the standard bumper must be painted. Follow the BMW painting instructions.

The rear apron is made of RRIM-GF 15 %.

It is to be painted using BMW acrylic paint +10 % softface additive. The maximum temperature for stoving the paint is 80 °C.

Parts marked with a double asterisk ** are not included in the mounting kit and must be ordered according to the equipment of the car.

All other parts are included in the corresponding mounting kit, depending on the equipment of the car.

4. To install the accessory rear apron on cars with PDC

Insert the holders for the PDC sensors (8) into the accessory rear apron (1) and secure them with the Philips screws (6).

5. To install the accessory rear apron on all cars

The figure shows the final mounting of the top support on the rear apron. The side reinforcements are to be finally mounted on the accessory rear apron using the same procedures.

Press the top support (20) into the accessory rear apron (1) to form a positive connection and check that it is secure.

Push the large clips (22) on the fastening pins (21) right into position and press them firmly into position (see magnified view).

Ensure that all the large clips (22) in the other positions (23) are pushed into place and pressed into position.

Remove the rear apron support (20) that you took off the standard bumper and fit it to the positions shown on the accessory rear apron (1) using the rear apron expanding rivets (4).

Insert the rear apron expanding rivets (4) into the accessible mountings and secure them.

Insert the ornamental grille (3) into the accessory rear apron (1) using the recesses as shown in the

Ensure that the ornamental grille (3) is flat on the appropriate mounting points (20).

Secure the ornamental grille (3) to the accessory rear apron (1) using the 25 Philips screws (2). The magnified view shows one mounting point on the accessory rear apron (1).

Check that the ornamental grille (3) is secure.

5. Assembly of the accessory “rear skirt” on all cars produced from 03.2003

5. To install the accessory rear apron on all cars

Install the completed accessory rear apron.

Use the wheel arch expanding rivets (5) from the parts kit to install the wheel arch trim (20).
