BMW Installation Instructions
Only in conjunction with Installation Instructions, Order No. 01 29 9 410 727 Navigation System Mark IIi
Intended for use in BMW dealer organisation only.
Installation time: 0.5 hours.
The installation time may vary depending on the condition and equipment of the vehicle.
Knowledge of the body electrical system is required.
On vehicles already equipped with a telephone speaker (identical to option 640), the connection line to
the speaker of the hands-free system must be connected to the switching module.
Particular care must be taken during installation to ensure that cables and wires are not kinked, bent or

1. Vehicle Preparation
- Print out fault memory
- Disconnect battery
- Remove front left entrances trip
- Remove cover under instrument panel in left-hand footwell
- Remove left A-pillar trim panel
- Remove left door isolating connector
- Fold back carpet in area of driver’s footwell (expose ground terminal)

4. Installing Switching Module

Figure shows front left entrance from inside:
Connect branch A1, 2-pin black pin housing from switching module A to branch B 11, 2-pin socket housing from navig ation wiring harness.
Connect branch A2 to supplied black 2-pin socket housing as follows : Red/white wire in P IN 1
White/brown wire in PIN 2
Screw on branch A3, 6 mm ground eye from switching module A at g round terminal point X 173 at left-hand entrance.
Connect branch A6, 3-pin black housing from switching module A to branch B 10, 3-pin black socket housing from navigation wiring harness.

Follow s pecified sequenc e.
Supplied shrink sleeves (1) must be fitted over branches A8, 1-pin socket contact, blue wire and A9, 1-pin socket contact blue/brown wire.

Slide speaker connector X 18196 out of door isolating connector (1) as illustrated.

Unplug pin contac t (1) of speaker cable (2), blue/white wire, from P IN 28 of 8-pin black pin housing X 18196.
Connect branch A10, 1-pin pin contact, blue wire of switching module A to 8-pin pin housing of door isolating connector X 18196 in P IN 28.
Connect existing 1-pin pin contac t (1), blue/white wire of speaker cable (2) to branch A8, 1-pin socket housing , blue wire of switching module.
Unplug pin contact (3) of speaker cable (2), blue/brown wire, from P IN 29 of 8-pin black pin housing X 18196.
Connect branch A11, 1-pin pin housing , blue/brown wire of switching module A to 8-pin pin housing of door isolating connector X 18196 in PIN 29.
Connect existing 1-pin pin contact (2), blue/brown wire of speaker cable to branch A9, 1-pin socket housing , blue/brown wire of switching module.
Slide 8-pin black pin housing X 18196 together with branches A10 and A11 back into door isolating connector (4). 10

Fit both shrink sleeves (1) over the connected contacts (branches A8 and 2) and (branches A9 and 3) of the speaker cables and shrink on with hot-air blower.
Reassemble door isolating connector X 18196.
Only for or vehicles with telephone provisions option 640

Connect existing 3-pin yellow socket housing (1) of speaker cable for telephone speaker to branch A7, 3-pin yellow pin housing of switching module.

The coding of the switching module A must be discussed and agreed upon with the customer. Coding loop A4, blue wire, must not be changed.
If the customer requires that the radio is not muted during a navigation announcement, coding loop A5, white wire, must be cut through at the switching module and the ends of the wires insulated.
Secure switching module A with cable tie to speaker wiring harness in area of A-pillar.
5. General Information
Reassemble removed parts in reverse order of removal.
Print out fault memory.

Coding loop open: Navigation announcement does not mute radio announcement.
