Installation instructions for M Technic rear spoiler BMW 6 Series E24 CS models

Notes on painting:
The outer section of the rear spoiler is primer-coated and has a paint undercoat, so that it is only necessary to apply the appropriate top coat of paint.

Work procedure: BMW instructions for painting plastics (see BMW painting brochure)
BMW acrylic paint + 20 % soft-face additive

Important: maximum temperature for stoving 50°C

Attaching instructions:

  • Clean the surfaces to be joined until free of grease
  • Adhesive tape must be attached at room temperature. To ensure adequate adhesion, the parts to be joined should be heated to 40°C and pressed together for 5-10 sec.

Tools and equipment required:
Screwdrivers (for slotted and Phillips head screws)
For cars without a rear spoiler fitted as standard:
Tape measure Masking tape Hammer Centre punch Power drill
Twist drill, 6.5 mm dia.
Core drill, 12 mm dia.
In addition, on cars with a rear spoiler fitted as standard: Socket wrench, 9 mm

Remove screws.

Disconnect and take out the light in the luggage com­partment lid.

Remove screws and open cover.

Detach the retaining strap and take off the toolbox.

Pull off trim at left and right.

On cars without a rear spoiler fitted as standard, holes must be drilled in the luggage compartment lid. Attach masking tape (app. 30 mm wide) across the entire width of the luggage compartment lid at distance k from the lower edge.

Mark out the holes taking measurements with a tape

 

A = 690 mm a = 212 mm
B = 685 mm b = 102 mm
C = 500 mm c = 110 mm
D = 180 mm d = 110 mm
k = app. 100 mm

Insert and engage protective clips (1).

Mark out the holes taking measurements with a tape с

On cars with a rear spoiler fitted as standard:

Remove the plastic nuts from the luggage compartment lid and take off the standard spoiler.

Note: The spoiler is bonded to the luggage compartment lid. Heat the adhesive film to detach the spoiler.

Attach masking tape and mark position of outer holes (3, 4) (see picture 630 51 570 for measurements). Centre- punch and drill the holes with a 6.5 mm dia drill. Carefully peel off the masking tape.

Deburr the holes and coat with zinc powder paint.

Paint the outer section of the spoiler (note painting in­structions).

Attach the adhesive strip (note attachting instructions).

  • = 130 mm long
  • = 270 mm long
  • = 160 mm long
  • = 1220 mm long

Remove the protective sheet from the adhesive tape and place the rear spoiler outer section on the spoiler. Secure the outer section with 6 screws.

Insert the M Technic spoiler in the holes and secure with hex nuts (centre) and bolts (outside).

Note: do not forget the sealing washers.

Attach protective strips to the rear side panels.

To compensate for the extra weight of the luggage com­partment lid with the rear spoiler attached, increase the torsion bar spring pre-loading if necessary by engaging it in stop 2 (special tool 51 2 100 is required for this pur­pose).
