BMW Installation Instructions
Important safety information
In view of the effect on the car’s dynamic driving characteristics, authorization is given only for installation of the entire aerodynamic package (front apron, side skirts, side panel trims, rear apron and rear spoiler).
No responsibility will be accepted by BMW AG for damage arising if this urgent recommendation is not complied with.
Tools and materials required:
Allen key, 10 mm
Twist drill bits, 3.5 mm, 5.5 mm, 6.5 mm, 8.5 mm
Offset ring wrench, 8 mm
Hammer, 250 g
Water-soluble marker pen

The installation kit contains the following parts:
1 Bumper trim
5 Securing plugs
7 Slide-on nuts
7 Self-tapping hex-head screws, 25 mm long
2 Phillips-head self-tapping screws, 13 mm long
5 Holders for the bumper trim
2 Guides for bumper trim
4 Spreader rivets
2 Covers for towing lug
2 Retaining strips
2 Mountings for bumper holder

2. Removing the bumper
Take out Allen screws (1) and washers (2) and remove bumper (3) from car as indicated by the arrows.
To avoid damaging the paintwork, the bumper (3) should be taken off by two people.

3. Dismantling the bumper
Remove bumper strips (1,2, 3) by levering out the retaining lugs (4) as indicated by the arrows (34 items). The bumper strips are no longer required.
The middle bumper strip (2) must be removed first.

Take out spreader-rivet pins (1). Remove the nine spreader rivets (2). The spreader rivets are no longer required.

Lever out the ten retaining lugs (1), so that bumper trim (2) comes away from bumper support (3).
Press sides of bumper trim (2) outwards as indicated by arrows and remove it from bumper support.

4. Drilling the extra holes required
Install four holders (1) in the bumper support (4) using pins (2, 3) as illustrated.
Pins (2, 3) are used to secure the holders.
Pre-drill holes (5) through hole (6) in the holders (1) to 3.5 mm, then drill them out to 6.5 mm.

As illustrated, attach the template supplied (1) to the right and left sides of the car.
Punch-mark where the holes (2, 3) are to be drilled, drill 3.5 mm holes and open them out to 8.5 mm.
Remove template (1). De-burr drilled holes (2, 3).
Remove PVC coating around the drilled holes (2, 3). Paint drilled holes (2, 3) and area free of PVC with zinc powder paint.

Use a tape measure and water-soluble pen to mark the bumper support as shown in the drawing.
Note: A = 150 mm
Holes (1, 2) are located on B = 300 mm
the bumper centreline C = 600mm
Mark where holes (3) are to be drilled:
7 holes, 8.7 mm from edge (4).
Punch-mark the holes, then drill with a 5.5 mm bit.
Drilling produces glass dust.
Gloves must be worn when drilling.
Once the holes are drilled, wipe away glass dust with a damp cloth.

5. Assembling the new bumper
Fit mountings for the bumper holders (1) into the six locating points (2) on the M Technic bumper trim (3). Secure mountings for the bumper holders (1) by inserting wedges (4) (6 wedges per side)

Fit holders (1) by inserting and pressing in spreader rivets (2) (5 holders).

Install clips (1) at the points indicated on the bumper support (2).
The points are marked by a slight recess.

Engage clips (2) on bumper support (1) in the recesses (3) in the bumper trim (4).

Install bumper support (1) as indicated by arrow.

From below, fit slide-on nuts (1) into the slots (2) in bumper trim (3).
Screw self-tapping bolts (4) through bumper support (5) and bumper trim (3) and into slide-on nuts (1) (7 selftapping hex bolts).

6. Preparing the car to accept the new bumper
Insert grommets (1) into the drilled holes (2) on left and right sides of car.

The guides (1) are marked with the spare parts number.
Even spare parts number:
right guide (as viewed from driver’s seat)
Odd spare parts number:
left guide (as viewed from driver’s seat)
Fit guides (1) and secure by inserting and pressing in spreader rivets (2).

Fit adapter (1) for towing lug (2) and cover (3) to the towing lug (2) as shown, and secure by screwing in two Allen screws (4) and washers (5).

7. Installing the bumper
Push bumper (1) on to right and left guides, insert Allen screws (2) with washers (3) through openings for towing lugs (4, 5) and attach.
To avoid damage to paintwork, the bumper should be installed by two people.

Attach Phillips-head screws (1).
Align bumper (2) correctly.
Bumper (2) must not protrude more than 3 mm into the wheel arch.
Tighten Phillips-head screws (1) and Allen screws (4).

If gap between wheel arch panel and bumper is uneven: Loosen hex nuts (arrows) on right and left sides of car until the impact damper can be moved.
Align the bumper until bumper gap is even.
Tighten hex bolts (arrows).
The hex bolts (arrows) must be loosened from underneath the car.

Insert retaining strip (1) into cover (2) of the towing lug and into the bumper (3).
Press cover for towing lug (2) into bumper (3).
Remove the bumper by following the installation proc dure in the reverse order.
The bumper already has a primer coat and undercoat.
It only requires painting with a suitable top coat. Procedure: as for BMW plastic paints.
BMW acrylic paint + 20 % softface additive.
Maximum paint stoving temperature is 80° C (see BMW paint brochure)
To prevent the bumper from distorting, it is vitally important for the packaging to be used as a support for the painting process. Place bumper on the packaging in such a way that it can be painted in a stress-free condition.
After painting, install bumper according to the procedure described above and increase the tyre pressure in all four tyres to 0.1 bar above the manufacturer’s recommended pressure.
