Installation instructions for seat heating BMW 3 Series (E30) Convertible

BMW Installation Instructions

Instructions and illustrations are given for left-hand-drive models. On right-hand-drive cars, some work must be car­ ried out on the opposite side of the vehicle or in mirror-image fashion.

Tools and materials required:

Flat-bladed screwdriver

14. Functional check

1. Folding and stowing the soft top

Open the side windows fully and fold down the soft top as described in the BMW owner’s handbook.

Close soft top cover.

Cars with hard tops:

Remove the hard top in accordance with BMW installation instructions No. 01 29 9 781 269.

2. Removing left and right front seats

Push the seat back against the rear stop.

If the seat is adjustable in height, set it to the highest position.

Pull off rubber caps (1).

Unscrew hex nuts (2) and remove washers .

Push the seat forward against the front stop. Pull off rubber caps (1).

Take out hex bolts (2) and lift the seat out of the car.

3. Removing centre console

Lift the rear ashtray out of the centre console in the direction of the arrow.

Remove the hex nut (arrow).

Detach the centre console at the front by pulling backwards .

On models with electronic-hydraulic automatic transmls· sion control:

Pull off connecting plug (arrow).

On all models:

Pull off ashtray light (1) in the direction of the arrow. Remove the centre console.

4. Removing storage tray

On models with manual gearbox:

Lift out gear lever gaiter (1) in the direction of the arrow.

On models with automatic transmission:

Lift out the trim cover (arrow).

Take out Phillips screws (1) and remove selector lever trim (2).

Lift out electric window lift switches (1). Pull plug connec­ tions (2) off switch (1).

Remove hex nut (arrow).

Take Phillips screws (1) out of front ashtray. Lift out ashtray console (2).

Disconnect cables from cigarette lighter (1) and ashtray light (2).

Remove ashtray console.

Take out the hex screw (arrow).

Rotate left and right retaining screws (1) through 90° and remove.

Remove storage tray (1) in the direction of the arrow.

5. Removing lower section of instrument panel

Rotate screws (1) through 90° and remove lower instrument panel section (2).

On cars equipped with exterior temperature indicator/digital clock or on-board computer, pull the plug off the gong.

When installing:

Make sure instrument panel section (2) is correctly located in retaining clips (3).

6. Removing front left side panel trim

Take out hex bolts (1).

Remove engine compartment lid release lever (2). Take out Phillips screw (3).

Pull off edge protection (1) near the side trim (2) in the direc­ tion of the arrow.

Remove side trim (2).

Cars equipped with loudspeaker system:

Remove front left loudspeaker.

Take out Phillips screws (arrows).

When Installing:

When installing the loudspeaker, ensure that none of the cables are trapped.

Carefully pull loudspeaker cable (1) away from footwell loudspeaker.

Cars equipped with Sound System:

Break blue plug connection (2, 3) and remove loudspeaker cable (4).

Remove footwell loudspeaker.

7. Removing rear seat

Lift out the rear seat in the direction shown by the arrow.

8. Removing seat backs

Remove seat belt catches (1).

Unscrew right and left hex bolts (arrow).

Remove seat back from its mountings in the direction of arrow.

9. Removing right and left door sill trim

Lift out cover (1) around seat belt anchorage at points (2, 3) and remove it.

Note:

The cover is in two parts (arrow).

Pull spreader riv.et (arrow) out of the spreader clamps in the door sill trim.

When installing:

First insert the spreader clamps, then the spreader rivets.

Remove door sill trim (1) in the direction of arrow.

10. Removing rear side trim

Pull cover of left side trim to the rear in direction of arrow.

Remove loudspeaker cover (arrow) from the side trim.

Remove Phillips screws (arrows).

Carefully pull edge protection (1) off in the direction of arrow. On cars equipped with loudspeaker system:

Remove the loudspeaker cable. On all cars:

Lift the trim upwards and carefully remove it.

11. Installing additional wiring harness

Remove hex bolt (1) from earthing point (2).

Bolt earth wire (brown) from the additional wiring harness to earthing point (2). Push cable plug (3) into the special equip­ ment plug.

Note:

The connections on the special equipment plug are of dif­ ferent patterns, so that cable plug (3) will only fit into the designated socket.

Fold back the carpet.

Install additional wiring harness (1) as illustrated.

Note:

Fit the additional wiring harness in the cable holders (ar­ rows) provided as standard on the car.

Push connecting wires (2 . . . 4) through the holes in the carpet. Fit the carpet again.

Install the following parts by carrying out the removal procedure in the reverse order:

Rear side trim

Seat back and rear seat Door sill trims

Front left side trim Storage tray Ashtray

12. Installing seat heating switches

Cut out pre-formed apertures (1) in the centre console (2).

Insert seat heating switches. Plug cables into switches.

Note:

Switch (1) for the left seat. Switch (2) for the right seat. Install centre console.

When installing:

Carry out the removal procedure in the reverse order.

13. Installing heating elements

13.1 BMW sports seat 1

Pull off handles (1) in the direction of the arrows. Take out Phillips screws (2).

Pull off trim (1) from below as indicated by the arrow.

Front passenger’s seat:

T.ake out Phillips screw (1) and remove holder (2). Lift rear panel (3) upwards out of its retaining clips.

Unhook seat upholstery fabric (1) from retaining spikes (2) at the top and bottom.

Pull off tensioning strip (3) in the direction of the arrow.

Carefully bend open the retaining rings (1). Remove seat back (2).

Remove retaining clips (1).

Fold back upholstery fabric (2).

Fold back foam material (1) in the direction shown by the arrow.

Insert seat back heating elements (2) between the fleece (3) and the upholstery fabric (4).

Note:

The heating elements for the seat back and seat base are of different lengths.

The heating elements for the seat bases have the connec­ ting plug for the special equipment harness on the cable end.

Fold down upholstery fabric (1) and attach it to the foam material (2) with the universal tacker.

Important:

Do not damage heating element cable (3). Install seat back.

Close retaining rings. Attach the tensioning strip.

Remove clip (1) from thigh support (2).

Pull out pin (3) and remove the thigh support in the direction of the arrow.

Take out hex bolts (1) at the left and right. Remove belt catch (2).

Lever out seat rails (1) on the left and right.

Pull cross-strut (1) out of seat rails (2) on the left and right. Remove corrugated washers (3).

Remove cross-strut.

Unhook upholstery fabric (1) from retaining spikes (2).

Carefully bend open all retaining rings (1).

Remove seat base (1) in the direction of the arrow.

Pull out staples (1).

Fold back upholstery fabric (2).

Insert heating elements (1) for the seat base between fleece (2) and upholstery fabric (3).

Fold down upholstery fabric (1) and attach it to the foam material (2) with a universal tacker.

Important:

Take care not to damage the heating element cable (3). Install seat base.

Close the retaining rings.

Run seat back heating element cable (1) to the underside of the seat, without pulling it taut.

Insert clip (2) into frame (3) and run heating element cable (3) through it.

Fit the corrugated washers. Insert cross-strut into seat rails. Attach the seat rails.

Insert heating element cables into connecting plug.

1 = red

2 = red/yellow

3 = red or yellow

4 = red/yellow or brown

Push clip (1) on to frame (3) and insert heating element cable (2) into clip.

Attach heating element cable to frame (2) with cable straps. Install rear panel, holders, trim and handles.

Install front seats.

When installing:

Carry out the removal procedure in the reverse order. Connect cable plugs together underneath the seats.

13.2 BMW sports seat 2

Pull off handles (1) in the direction of the arrows. Take out Phillips screws (2).

Pull off trim (1) from below as indicated by the arrow.

Front passenger’s seat:

Take out Phillips screw (1) and remove holder (2). Lift rear panel (3) upwards out of its retaining clips.

Unhook upholstery fabric (1) from retaining spikes (2) at top and bottom.

Pull off tension strip (3) in the direction of the arrow and push through to seat front.

Mark fleece (1) approx. 1.5 cm below horizontal seam (2). Carefully make cuts of the same width as the heating elements.

Important:

Take care not to damage the upholstery fabric.

Insert heating elements (1) between the fleece and the upholstery fabric and through the slits.

Important:

Make sure the heating elements are not twisted or jammed.

Note:

The heating elements for the seat back and seat are of dif­ ferent lengths.

The longer conductors must be installed in the seat back.

Pull heating elements through to crossbar (1).

Push the tensioning strip and heating element cable through to the rear.

Attach the tensioning strip.

Attach upholstery fabric (1) to retaining spikes. Important:

Do not attach heating elements (2) to the spikes.

Take out hex bolts (1) on the left and right. Remove belt catch (2).

Lever out seat rails (1) on the left and right.

Pull cross-strut (1) out of seat rails (2) on the left and right. Remove corrugated washers (3).

Unhook upholstery fabric (1) from retaining spikes (2).

Remove clip (1) from thigh support (2).

Pull out pin (3) and remove the thigh support in the direction of the arrow.

Carefully open the retaining rings (4).

Lift up seat base (1) and pull out staples (2).

Carefully fold back the upholstery fabric.

Mark fleece (1) approx. 1.5 cm below horizontal seam (2). Carefully make cuts ot the same width as the heating elements.

Important:

Take care not to damage the upholstery fabric.

Insert heating elements (1) through the cuts.

Important:

Make sure the heating elements are not twisted or jammed.

Pull the heating elements through to cross-strut (1).

Fold down heating elements (1) and insert between foam material (2) and upholstery cover (3).

Fit upholstery cover (3), pull taut and attach to foam material (2) with a universal tacker. Insert and close retaining rings. Install thigh support.

When Installing:

Carry out the removal procedure in the reverse order.

Run seat back heating element cable (1) to the underside of the seat, without pulling it taut.

Attach upholstery fabric (1) to retaining spikes.

Push clip (1) on to frame (2) and insert heating element cable (3) in the clip.

Fit the corrugated washers. Insert cross-strut into the seat rails.

Attach the seat rails. Install the seat belt catch.

Notes:

Seat belt bolt tightening torque = 45 Nm.

When installing, carry out the removal procedure in reverse order.

Insert heating element cables in the connecting plug.

  1. red
  2. red/yellow
  3. yellow
  4. brown

Fit holder (1) on frame (2). Push on cable plug (3).

Attach the heating element cables to frame (2) with cable straps.

On two-door models:

Install cross-strut, rear panel, holders, trim and handles.

On four-door models:

Install the rear panel.

On all models:

Install the front seats. Install the seat belts.

Notes:

Seat belt bolt tightening torque = 45 Nm.

When installing, carry out the removal procedure in reverse order.

Connect the cable plugs together on the underside of the seat.

14. Functional check

Press switches (1).

3 spiral heater elements = for heating up

1 spiral heater element = for keeping warm

Recommendation:

Switch from “heating up” to “keeping warm” after approx. 5 minutes. The telltale lamp in the switch indicates when the heating is on.
