BMW Installation Instructions
Instructions and illustrations are given here for left-hand drive cars. On right-hand-drive cars, various work stages must be carried out on the opposite side or in mirror-image fashion.
Tools and materials required:

The HiFi system has been designed in every respect to suit
the car’s interior and BMW Bavaria car radios. Installation of other radios and unauthorised connections can cause damage to the system.
If the BMW Bavaria C Electronic and BMW Bavaria Elec tronic Exclusiv radios with built-in front/rear balance control and four loudspeaker terminals are connected up to the HiFi additional wiring harness, adapter cable 65 12 1 379 329 must be used.
On other 4-channel units, use adapter cable 82 11 9 416 168 (available from BMW).
Note the radio manufacturer’s connecting instructions.
1. Disconnecting the battery

Print out the fault memories.
(When the battery is disconnected, the fault memories are automatically erased.)
Unscrew the negative terminal (arrow) and lay aside.

Remove cover (1) from the rear seat base on the right. Remove hex bolt (2) and take off the cover (3).
Print out the fault memories.
(When the battery is disconnected, the fault memories are automatically erased.)

Unscrew the negative cable (arrow) from the earthing point.
2. Removing rear seat base and back

Fold up the centre armrest.
Lift seat base (1) out of its holder in the direction of the ar rows and remove.

Fold the rear centre armrest down.
Pull off the tunnel trim (secured by burr fasteners) for rear centre armrest.
Squeeze together the catches as indicated by the arrows and remove the rear centre armrest.

Unscrew the hex nuts (1).
Remove the hex bolts (2) from seat belt. When installing:
Tightening torque for hex bolts (2): 46 Nm.

Fold back the insulating mat (1) on both sides.
Unscrew the hex nut (2) on the seat back on either side.

Lift up the seat back (1) out of its holders and pull forward to remove.
Feed the seat belt through the trim and remove the seat back (1).
3. Removing lower left-hand instrument panel trim

Take out the Phillips screw (1) and lift out the trim (2) in the direction of the arrow.

Turn the plastic screws (1) through goo and remove. Remove the four Phillips screw (2) and pull the instrument panel trim (3) down to remove.
Pull off the plug from the gong.
Pull off air conditioning temperature sensor and vacuum hose if applicable.
Remove instrument panel trim (3).

Lever out plastic covers (1) with a screwdriver and remove Phillips screws (2). Remove trim (3).
4. Removing lower side trims

Pull door seal (1) next to the side trim (2) off the A-post on either side in the direction of the arrow.

Lever off cap (1) with a screwdriver and remove Phillips screw (2). Pull off lever (3).
Turn the four plastic hex-socket screws (4) through goo an remove the left-hand side trim.

Turn the two plastic hex-socket screws (1) on the right-hand side trim (2) through goo and remove the side trim (2).
5. Installing loudspeakers in the side trims

Remove insulating material (arrow) from the loudspeaker cutout.

Place loudspeaker (1) on the footwell trim from behind. Place the spring washers in position and secure the loudspeaker with four nuts (2).
Before installing the side trims, connect up the loudspeaker wires.
The loudspeaker wires for the right-hand footwell are tied back in the right-hand A-post.
6. Installing wiring harness in instrument panel

Remove the two Phillips screws (1) and pull forward the in strument cluster (2) as far as the wiring allows.

Remove the trim for radio cutout.
Install the additional wiring harness (1) and aerial lead above the steering column along the main wiring harness, from the left-hand A-post (2) to the radio cutout (3), and secure with the enclosed cable straps.

Connect up the black 8-pin plug (1) and tied-back 8-pin plug (2).
7. Installing front/rear balance (only with 2-channel wiring harnesses)

Cut rectangle (2) out of the template (1).The additional cable No. 65 12 1 37g 32g must be used in place of the front/rear balance control if necessary. See the separate radio installation instructions for details of connec ting up (Bavaria C Electronic and Bavaria C Exclusiv only). Cut away template (1) at edges.
On 4-channel units there is no cutout (front/rear balance control is integrated into these radios).
Template A = left-hand-drive model
Template B = right-hand-drive model

Glue on the template (1), mark the cutout (2) and cut.
Take care not to cut through cables located behind the trim.
The cutout (2) for the front/rear balance control is pre marked on the reverse of the trim.

Insert the trim (arrow) as indicated in the cutout.

Introduce the 8-pin plug (1) from the additional wmng harness through the trim (2) and connect up to the front/rear balance control (3).
Push the front/rear balance control (3) into the trim (2) and engage in position.
8. Installing mid-range loudspeakers

Lever off trim (1) on either side of the car with a small screwdriver .
There is a recess (arrow) for inserting the screwdriver on the side of the trims (1).

Push on sheet-metal nuts (arrows).

Plug the loudspeakers cables (arrows) on to the loudspeaker.
The loudspeaker wires to the mid-range loudspeaker loca tions are installed as standard in the instrument panel.

Insert the loudspeaker in the cutout and secure with two Phillips screws (arrows).
Insert the trim panel.
9. Installing additional wiring harness at rear

Lever out the front and rear cover trims (1) on the left-hand side of the car with a screwdriver .

Pull cover trims (1) off clips (2) in the direction of arrow.

Lever out the clips (arrow) with gripper pliers.

Push clips (1) on to the cover trims (2) as illustrated.

Fold back the carpet on left at rear seat base, remove four spreader rivets (1) and take off plastic cover (2).

Fold back the carpet on left-hand door sill and remove the six spreader rivets (1) on the cover (2).
Neither the driver ‘s seat nor the B-post trim need be removed.

Fold up the cover (1) and run the additional wiring harness and aerial lead (2) alongside the main wiring harness (3) as far as the rear seat base. Secure the additional wiring harness (2) with the cable straps for the main wiring harness.

Connect up the black 6-pin plug (1) with plug (2) on the rear left relay box.

Pull off edge protector (1) at C-post.
Pull off C-post trims (2) on either side in the direction of the arrow and disconnect the plug (3).

Remove plastic nut (1) and fold back insulating mat (2).
10. Installing loudspeakers beneath rear shelf

Pull the rear shelf forward in the direction of the arrow.

Cut out the pre-marked apertures (arrow) in the insulating mat on either side with a universal knife and remove cuttings.

Insert three spreader nuts on each side.

Run loudspeaker cable (1) to the loudspeaker location under the insulating mat (2) as shown by the drawing.
Secure the loudspeaker cable (1) as far as possible to the main wiring harness, using cable straps.
Run the aerial lead (3) as far as the aerial amplifier (4). Install the aerial amplifier by following the separate installa tion instructions.

Affix four sheet-metal nuts (arrows) to the dish.

Secure loudspeaker dish (1) on right and left with three self tapping screws (2).

Take the loudspeaker cover from the installation kit and fit on the two sheet-metal nuts (arrows).

Place the tweeters in position and secure with two self tapping screws (arrows).

Fit the loudspeaker leads to the tweeters (1) and woofers (2).

Place the loudspeaker cover on the loudspeaker and secure with four raised-head self-tapping screws (arrows) (black, with washer).

Affix the HiFi label to the loudspeaker trim as illustrated.
11. Removing luggage compartment trims

Take out the luggage compartment mat, unscrew the plastic screws (1) and remove the rear bulkhead trim (2).
Models with ski bag:
Remove the ski bag.

Rotate plastic screw (1) through 90° and remove left-hand luggage compartment trim (2).

Remove the two plastic nuts in the luggage compartment (arrows) on the wiring harness cover.
Pull back the wiring harness cover.

Remove two plastic nuts (arrow) on the rear wiring harness cover.
Remove the wiring harness cover.

Pull the additional wiring harness through the rubber grom met (arrow) from the passenger compartment into the lug gage compartment.
Apply soap to the grommet to facilitate drawing through.
12. Installing amplifier

Insert module (1) from the installation kit in amplifier (2).
A coloured sticker is attached to the module; after fitting, this sticker should be affixed to the amplifier in an easily visible position.

Push four sheet metal nuts (1) on to the holder (2).

Place the holder (1) on the amplifier (2) and secure with three M6x10 hex bolts (3).
The holder (1) can only be screwed to the amplifier (2) in one position.

Attach foam strips (1) as illustrated to the amplifier (2).

Connect up the two plugs (1, 2) from the additional wiring harness to the correspondingly-coloured sockets on the amplifier.

Screw tight the holder (1) with amplifier in the luggage com partment with four Phillips screws (2) as illustrated.
Reassemble all removed parts by following the reverse pro cedure.
13. Removing front door trims on either side

Wind the door window down completely. Lever out cover cap (1).
Remove Torx screw (2), pull off window crank (3) and take off washer (4).

Pull off mirror knob (1) and lift out mirror switch (2) with special tool (I).

Pull cable plug (1) off mirror switch (2).

Lift out cover cap (1) and remove Phillips screw (2).

Lift out cover cap (1) and unscrew Torx screw (2).

Unscrew door catch (1) in the direction of arrow and pull up.

Mask off the marked areas (1) with tape (2) to prevent damage to the paintwork when removing the door trim.

Lift door trim (1) out of retaining clips in the direction of arrow.
Renew any damaged clips.

Remove the wire cable (1) in the direction of arrow. Take off the door trim.

Carefully pull off the foam (1) in the direction of the arrow. Take off the sleeve (2).
Renew the adhesive cord if damaged.

Lever out the retaining pins (1) on cover (2).
Press the cover (2) a short way upwards in the direction of the arrow and remove.

On cars with at least one special equipment item, the loudspeaker cable is tied back in the door.
Run the loudspeaker cable (1) as far as the mirror triangle (2).
14. Installing tweeters in the mirror triangle

Insert plastic nut (1) from the installation kit on the mirror triangle (2) as illustrated.

Insert the loudspeaker housing (1) and secure with screw (2).
The loudspeaker housing (1) must be inserted between the window seal (3) and door frame (4).

Fit the loudspeaker cable (arrows) on loudspeaker.

Press the loudspeaker (1) into the housing (2) in the direc tion of arrow and secure with Phillips screw (3).
Press on cover cap (4). Assemble the door.
15. Installing the radio

Insert the holder as illustrated (1).
The installation kit includes four different holders: for right hand-drive and left-hand-drive cars, with and without air con ditioning.

Push pin (arrow) on to the radio.
Connect up and install the radio by following the separate in stallation instructions.
Install all removed parts according to the reverse procedure. Connect up the battery negative lead and carry out a func tional check.
