Installation instructions for outside temperature indicator/digital clock BMW 5 Series (E34) (excluding 535i)

BMW Installation Instructions

Instructions and illustrations are given here for left-hand­ drive cars. On right-hand-drive cars, various work stages must be carried out on the opposite side or in mirror-image fashion .

Tools required:

Phillips screwdriver

Disconnecting the battery BMW 520i, 525i:

Important:

Print out the fault memories (the memories are automatically erased when the battery is disconnected).

Unscrew the negative cable from the battery and lay aside.

BMW 530i, 535i, 524td:

Pull cover cap (1) off the rear seat base on the right. Take out hex bolt (2) and remove cover (3).

Important:

Print out the fault memories (the memories are automatically erased when the battery is disconnected).

Unscrew the negative cable (arrow) from the earthing point.

Remove the radio unit or the dummy panel installed in the radio opening.

Press lever (1) in the direction of the arrow and lift out clock (2).

Note:

It is not necessary to remove the clock surround (2).

Installing outside temperature Indicator/digital clock

Set the desired display by turning screw (4) on the back of the indicator unit.

Insert the trim panel and push on until it locks into position.

Push outside temperature indicator/digital clock (1) into the opening. Press lever (2) in the direction of the arrow until out­ side temperature indicator/digital clock (1) is completely in­ serted.

Note:

The connecting wire for outside temperature indicator/digital clock (1) must not be extended or altered.

Removing lower left instrument panel trim section (only on BMW 520i and 524td cars)

Take out Phillips screw (1) and remove trim (2) as show by the arrow.

Rotate plastic screws (1) through 90° and remove.

Take out four Phillips screws (1) and pull instrument panel trim (3) downwards.

If installed, disconnect the plug for the air-conditioning tem­ perature sensor and pull off the low-pressure hose.

Remove instrument panel trim (3).

Installing gong

Mark measurements (A,B,C,D) on the trim and cut out rectangle (1).

A = 59 mm B = 24 mm
C = 66 mm D = 91 mm

Press in the holder as indicated by the arrow until it engages into position.

Insert gong (1) in holder (2) so that retaining arms (3) lock into position.

Insert plugs (1,2) in gong (3).

Installing temperature sensor

Push lever (1) in the direction of the arrow and remove left trim cover (2).

Insert the temperature sensor (arrow) as illustrated.

Insert yellow plug (1) from temperature sensor into yellow plug (2) from the wiring harness.

Note:

Yellow plug (2) with its two-wire connecting cable is tied back on the wiring harness in the bumper below and may be covered with insulating tape .

Install the parts by carrying out the removal procedure in reverse order.

Connect the battery and carry out a functional check.
