BMW Installation Instructions

The stereo system is precisely matched to the car’s interior and to BMW car radios. If other makes of radio are fitted, follow the instructions supplied by the manufacturer. It will be necessary to use auxiliary wiring harnesses on various radios (see BMW Parts Microfiche).

1. Disconnecting the battery

Remove the floor mat (1) from the luggage compartment.

Grasp side trim (1) in recess (2) and pull in the direction of arrow to remove.

IMPORTANT

Print out the fault memories.

The fault memories are erased when the battery is discon­ nected. The fault memories can only be printed out in an authorised BMW workshop.

Unscrew negative terminal clip (arrow) and lay on one side.

Remove right-hand side trim (1) in the direction of arrow.

Unscrew negative terminal clip (arrow) and lay on one side.

2. Removing luggage compartment trim

Remove rear trim (1) from rear bulkhead by removing plastic screws (2).

Mark the cutout (1) on the bulkhead trim (2) and cut away.

A = 310 mm R = 20 mm

Note

On cars fitted with a car telephone or a provision for car telephone installation (Siemens C2, Motorola, Bosch and Philips):

B = 400 mm

R = 20 mm

Pull pin (1) out of spreader rivet (2) and pull out spreader rivet.

Unscrew plastic nut (3).

Remove luggage compartment side trim (4).

Pull out spreader rivet and remove luggage compartment base trim (2).

Mark the luggage compartment base trim (1) as illustrated and cut away.

A = 35 mm
C = 30 mm
B = 370 mm

Note

On cars fitted with a car telephone or a provision for car telephone installation (Siemens C2, Motorola, Bosch and Philips):

A = 35 mm
C = 30 mm
D = 550 mm

3. Removing rear seat

Actuate catch (arrow) and pivot cover (2) forwards in the direction of arrow.

Remove first aid box (1).

F31 65 006

Release screws (1), lift up storage compartment for first aid box (2) and pull forward to remove.

Unscrew hex bolts (1), 10 mm across flats, from rear seat frame (2).

Lift rear seat (1) forward out of mounting and pull side trim (2) out of retaining clips in the direction of arrow.

Remove side trim (1) from the car in the direction of arrow.

F31 65 010

Remove hex bolt (1) from rear-seat frame (2).

F31 65 011

Lift out rear seat (1) in direction of arrow and remove from the vehicle.

4. Removing rear shelf

Pull off edge protector (1) at C-post in the direction of arrow.

Lift interior light (2) out of C-post trim (3) and pull plug bushing (4) off interior light.

Pull C-post trim (1) out of retaining clips in the direction of arrow and remove from the car.

Remove hex nuts (1), 16 mm across flats, and lift seat belt (2) off threaded bolt.

Lift plastic cover (1) out of rear shelf (2). Feed seat belt (3) through the slot and remove the plastic cover (1).

Lift out spreader clips (1), lift up rear shelf (2), feed seat belts (3) through the aperture in the rear shelf (2) and remove rear shelf from the vehicle.

Cut away pre-marked sections on insulating matting (1) with universal knife.

5. Removing centre console

Remove hex nuts (1) on left and right of centre armrest (3) and lift retaining tab (2) over threaded pin. Remove centre armrest (3).

Remove retaining screws (1).

Remove plastic nuts (1) on wiring-harness cover (2). Remove wiring-harness cover (2).

Engage handbrake lever (1) and lift cover (2) out of centre console.

Lift cover caps (1) out of storage compartment and remove Phillips-head screws (2).

Touch the ashtray cover (arrow) to open.

Lift ashtray (1) and hazard warning flasher switch (2) out of storage compartment.

Remove Phillips-head screw (1) and pull plug bushing (2) off hazard warning flasher (3).

Disconnect the plug connection (1) for the cigarette lighter and pull off ashtray light (2).

Lift out storage compartment (3).

Lift out switch (1), pull off plug bushings.

Lift up selector lever gaiter (1) to remove.

Unscrew Phillips-head screws (1) in selector lever trim (2).

Lift up selector lever trim (1) and pull off plug bushing (2).

Lift up selector lever trim (1) to remove.

Note

Feed selector lever gaiter (2) through the aperture.

Lift out radio trim (1).

Pull MID in-car computer (2) out of centre console.

Swivel hoop (3) in direction of arrow and pull off plug bushing (4).

Note

Remove MID in-car computer from the car and store in a safe place.

Remove Phillips-head screws (1).

F31 65 032

Pull trim (1) forward to remove from centre console. Swivel hoop (2) in direction of arrow and pull plug bushing (3) off the control unit (air conditioning).

Remove centre-console trim (1).

Remove Phillips-head screws (1) on inside of centre console.

6. Connecting up and installing auxiliary wiring harness

Pull the plug bushings (1) for the stereo wiring harness out of the sockets (2) on the centre console near the selector lever.

Substutute the HiFi auxiliary wiring harness for the stereo wiring harness and connect up.

Lift up the centre console (1), lift the stereo wiring harness out of the retaining clips and fit the auxiliary wiring harness (2) in its place Run the HiFi auxiliary wiring harness (2) to the luggage compartment (2).

Lift the stereo wiring harness out of the retaining clips in the luggage compartment and remove from the car. Run the HiFi auxiliary wiring harness (2) alongside the existing wiring harness to the rear loudspeaker locations.

7. Installing rear loudspeakers

Push plug bushing (1) on to the loudspeaker (2).

Offer up the loudspeaker (1) from the luggage compartment. Insert retaining hoop (2) in the aperture, swivel up loudspeaker (1) in the direction of arrow until it engages in position.

Secure the loudspeaker (1) with Phillips-head screw (2) and washer (3) from the interior.

When installing:

Assemble the centre console and rear seat in the reverse order of dismantling.

8. Installing audio amplifier

IMPORTANT

On cars fitted with a car telephone or a provision for car telephone installation (Siemens C2, Motorola, Bosch and Philips), the audio amplifier is installed on the right.

All installation work is carried out in mirror-image manner, with certain deviations.

Fit the holder (1) on the upright pins (2) on the left-hand side of the luggage compartment next to the rear bulkhead and secure with hex nuts (3).

Fit detent lock (1) with screw (2) on the bulkhead (3) underneath rear shelf from inside the luggage compartment.

When installing:

Install luggage compartment trim in the reverse order of removal.

Fit edge protector (1) on the holder (2) (audio amplifier).

Screw adapter plate (8) and holder (2) for audio amplifier to trim (3) as illustrated.

Note

On cars fitted with a car telephone or a provision for car telephone installation (Siemens C2, Motorola, Bosch and Philips), the holder (2) for audio amplifier is screwed to the right-hand trim without adapter plate (1).

Insert audio amplifier (1) in holder (2) and secure with 3 hex bolts (3).

Insert trim (1) complete with audio amplifier in the luggage compartment.

Press locking slide (2) in the direction of arrow and engage trim (1) in holder (3).

Fit the two plug bushings (1,2) from auxiliary wiring harness (colour-coded) on audio amplifier.

Crimp HiFi auxiliary wiring harness (1) on to holder (3) (audio amplifier) with 2 plastic binders (2).

Swing trim (1) in the direction of arrow and screw to detent lock (3) with screw catch.

9. Installing footwell loudspeakers

Turn plastic screws (1) through goo and remove. Pull down instrument panel trim (2) to remove. When installing:

When installing the trim, ensure that the ventilation shafts are fitted on exactly.

Remove recessed-head screw (1).

Remove lever for engine compartment cover (2).

Lift threshold strip (1) out of retaining clips at front end, rotate screw catches through go0 and remove footwell lining (3).

Note

The footwell lining is secured to the carpet by a retaining tab (arrow).

Fold away the carpet (1) around the installation location of the footwell loudspeaker.

Insert three spreader nuts (2) on either side.

Release tied-back plug bushing (1) on existing wiring harness and fit on to the loudspeaker (2).

Push loudspeaker (1) into A-post as illustrated.

Screw the loudspeaker (1) on to the A-post with 3 hex bolts (2).

When installing:

Ensure that the loudspeaker is not obstructed when the carpeting is folded back (1).

Install the footwell lining, lever for engine compartment cover and instrument panel in the reverse order of removal.

10. Removing door panels

Turn door catch button (1) anticlockwise to remove.

Lift out cover cap (1) and remove Phillips-head screw (2).

Lift cover caps (1) out of recessed handle and unscrew Phillips-head screws (2).

Lift footwell light (1) out of door trim (2) and pull off plug bushing.

Lift switch for electric window lifts (1) out of door trim (2).

Pull off plug bushings (1) and remove switch for electric win­ dow lifts (2).

Lift door trim (1) out of retaining clips in the direction of arrow.

When installing:

Renew damaged retaining clips.

On the back of the door trim, lift pull cable (1) out of the holder (2) in direction of arrow and remove pull cable (3) from actuating lever (4).

11. Installing door loudspeakers

Remove retaining discs (1) on the rear of the door trim from cover (2).

Lift the cover out of the door trim.

Insert cover with loudspeaker (1) into the door trim (2) and secure with 4 retaining discs.

Carefully pull away foam (1) in the direction of arrow .

When installing:

Renew adhesive cord if damaged.

Fit sheet-metal nut (1) on the window lift (2). Bond foam (3) on to the car door.

Fit loudspeaker (1) on the car door (2) and secure with 3 screws (3).

Release tied-back cable bushing (1) on the car door and connect to loudspeaker.

Release tied-back plug housing (1) on the car door and con­ nect with plug bushing (2) for door loudspeaker (3).

When installing:

Assemble the door trim in the reverse order of removal.

Check for functioning

For installation of the aerial and radio set, consult the in­ stallation instructions enclosed with each system.

Printing and other errors and omissions excepted. Sub­ ject to amendment.
