Trailer Tow Hitch BMW 5 Series E34/2 (Touring)

Specialised knowledge is required.

Installation time: approx. 4.0 hours – this may vary, depending on the condition of the vehicle and its fittings.

Instructions and illustrations are given for left-hand drive models. Various work stages must be carried out for right-hand drive models in mirror-image fashion.

In the Federal Republic of Germany, all fittings installed after initial registration must undergo inspection at the German Technical Inspection Agency (TUV) and be entered in the vehicle registration papers in accordance with § 19 (2) of the Regulations Authorizing the Use of Vehicles for Road Traffic (StVZO).

Assembly instructions

Using a spatula, remove bodywork sealant and underseal from bodywork surfaces which will come into contact with trailer tow hitch.

Then clean surfaces with petroleum ether and coat polished bodywork areas with inorganic zinc.

Drilling instructions

Burr all edges of bore holes and coat with inorganic zinc. Remove drillings completely.

1. Necessary Preparatory Tasks

Work steps:

  • Print out error memories.
  • Disconnect battery/batteries.
  • Remove floor mat from luggage compartment.
  • Remove spare wheel and jack.
  • Remove luggage-compartment panels.

(The right luggage-compartment panel is replaced by a new panel).

Lever split rivets (1) up and out.

Fold cover back in direction indicated by arrow and remove from vehicle.

2. Removing Rear Bumper

Remove hexagon nuts (1) from left wheel-house panel (2). Remove wheel-house panel (2).

Remove hexagon nuts (1) from right wheel-house panel (2). Pull out wheel-house panel (2) in area of bumper (3) in direction indicated by arrow.

Using a regular screwdriver, carefully lever out bumper strip (1) in direction indicated by arrow and remove.

Unscrew hexagon nuts (1) on left and right sides of bumper. With the aid of a second person, carefully pull out bumper (2) in direction indicated by arrow and remove.

Unscrew hexagon nuts (1).

Remove right and left impact absorbers (2).

Note

The impact absorbers (2) are no longer required.

3. Fitting Right and Left Bumper Brackets

The right and left bumper brackets are different. Pay attention to the inclinations of the contact plates (3), which correspond to the contour of the bumper.

Attach right and left bumper brackets (1).

Insert and tighten hexagon screws (2). Tightening torque of hexagon screws 9 Nm.

4. Installing Crossmember

Important

To avoid damaging paintwork, attach covering tape (2) to rear end plate (1).

Using a 5 mm dia. twist drill bit, drill through punch marks (3) on left and right of rear end plate (1) and enlarge bores to 12 mm dia.

Burr edges of bore holes and coat with inorganic zinc.

Remove underseal and bodywork sealant from left and right body contact surfaces for trailer tow hitch (1). Clean surfaces with petroleum ether and coat with inorganic zinc.

Important

Check threaded fittings on bodywork; if necessary, remove underseal or bodywork sealant from threads.

Attach bracket (1) to left and right sides of crossmember. Insert hexagon socket-head screws (2). Fit hexagon nuts (3) with washers (4) and tighten several turns by hand.

Attach crossmember (3). Insert hexagon screws (1) with washers (2) into left and right sides of crossmember (3) and tighten several turns by hand.

Press crossmember (1) into place. Insert left and right screws (2). Attach hexagon nuts (3) with washers (4) and tighten by hand. Align crossmember (1) and screw down tight.

Tightening torques:

M8 = 21 Nm

M10 = 42 Nm

5. Fitting Socket

Drill through base plate at point marked (1) and enlarge hole to 36 mm dia.

Bore area is designated by a punch mark.

Unscrew nuts (1) and remove fasteners (2).

Remove screw (3).

Press heat shield (1) towards left.

Feed supplementary wiring harness (1) through opening and lay to socket.

Insert rubber plug (2) into hole.

Fit rubber grommet (1) onto connector (2).

Attach socket (1).

Insert Phillips screws (2), fit hexagon nuts (3) and tighten Phillips screws (2).

Unscrew hexagon nuts (1).

Remove hexagon screw (2).

Lift cover (3) and withdraw microswitch cable connector (4). Remove cover (3).

Remove rear cover strip (1) on left side of vehicle.

Fold carpet back at right and left rear seat bases. Lever out split rivets (1). Remove right and left plastic covers (2).

Open fuse box (1) in seat base (rear right).

Screw down positive cable – red – (2) to position (3).

Screw down negative cable – brown – (4) to earth (ground) support (5).

Screw down positive cable – red – (1) to positive terminal (2) and negative cable – brown – (3) to negative terminal (4).

Insert 30 A fuse (1) into fuse-carrier (2) and secure fuse-carrier (2) in seat base.

6. Installing Trailer Module

BMW 525i, 530i, 535i only

Insert six 7.5 A fuses (1) into trailer module (2). Attach holder (3), insert hexagon screws (4) and tighten. Insert split clips (5).

Secure trailer module with holder (1) with screws (2) to side wall (rear left) as shown in illustration.

7. Installing Connecting Lead

Pull rear-seat bench (1) out of mounts in direction indicated by arrows and remove. Fold rear-seat backrests forwards.

Models with rear-seat heating

Disconnect cable plug-in connection underneath rear-seat bench.

Lay connecting lead (1) along vehicle wiring harness (fitted as standard) as shown in illustration.

Lever out rubber grommet (1) on left side of luggage compartment. Feed connecting lead (2) through opening (3) of rubber grommet (1) into luggage compartment.

Connect cable plug-in connection (1) to mating connectors (2) of supplementary wiring harness (3).

8. Removing Steering Wheel

The steering wheel can only be removed and refitted when the steering-wheel lock is disengaged. Insert ignition key and disengage steering-wheel lock. Open catch of steering-wheel height adjuster (1) in direction indicated by arrow. Pull out steering column (2) up to stop and lock steering-wheel height adjuster (1).

Carefully lever out BMW emblem (1). Unscrew self-locking hexagon nut (2). Remove washer (3). Mark position of steering wheel to steering spindle and remove steering wheel.

Important: Renew self-locking hexagon nut (2).

Tightening torque of hexagon nut 80 Nm.

Vehicles fitted with airbags

Caution!

The steering wheel may only be removed by an authorized BMW Service Station.

(See Repair Manual).

9. Installing Tell-Tale Lamp for Trailer Turn Indicator

Remove Phillips screws (arrowed).

Carefully pull out instrument cluster (1) up to steering column (2) and fold down.

Important

To prevent instrument cluster (1) from being scratched, cover steering column (2) with a cloth.

Install tell-tale lamp (1) in plug-in location (2) of instrument cluster (3) and turn through 90°.

Refit instrument cluster.

Important

Move turn-indicator lever (1) to 0 position.

Do not damage turn-indicator return cam.

Reinstall steering wheel.

10. Installing Fuses and Relays

Install 15 A fuse at plug-in station 18.

Install 30 A fuse at plug-in station 22.

Note

The designations are printed on the inside of the cover.

Fuse box I = low version models

Remove relay from plug-in station K16 and replace with

hazard-warning relay from installation kit.

Fuse box II = high version models

Remove relay from plug-in station K16 and replace with

hazard-warning relay from installation kit.

11. Installing Cover in Bumper

To avoid damaging the bumper, it is advisable to insert a plate (2) between the premarked area (1) and the plastic carrier (3). Mark plastic carrier (3) with centre punch and then drill through marked points (4) with a 5 mm dia. twist drill bit.

Carefully break off plastic section.

Mill plastic carrier (1) to size.

Cut out premarked area (1) on inside of bumper with a pad saw.

If necessary, refinish edge of opening with a file.

Reinstall rear bumper in reverse sequence.

12. Fitting Tow-Bar Mount

Secure tow-bar mount (1) with hexagon screw (2) and secure spherical head (3) in tool kit.

12. Attaching Nose-Weight Stickers

Attach nose-weight stickers as shown in illustration.

Vehicles with 75 kg nose weight

Attach nose-weight sticker (75 kg) to position (1).

Attach nose-weight sticker (min. 50 kg) to position (2).

Vehicles with 50 kg nose weight

Attach nose-weight sticker (50 kg) to position (2).

14. Operational Check

Reconnect battery.

When connecting up a trailer, check that the trailer lights and tKe turn indicators are in perfect working order.
