Vario Exclusiv Child Seat

Specialised knowledge is required for installation of mounting bracket for child seats to be fitted facing rear of vehicle.

Installation time is approx. 15 to 45 minutes, though this may vary according to condition and fittings of vehicle.

For workshop installation, these instructions are to be given to the customer.

General notes

Instructions and illustrations are given for left-hand drive models. For right-hand drive models, work stages should be carried out in mirror-image fashion.

Using the child seat on the passenger seat

For vehicles fitted with passenger-side air bags, the use of a child seat on the passenger seat is not permitted.

It should be ensured at all times that:

  • the passenger door is locked
  • the lap belt (type 1 seat belt) is secured tightly
  • the belt outlet at the backrest is positioned at shoulder height of your child (see chapter 2 for description)

2. Installing four-point seat belt assembly to child seat

Note

The four-point belt is only used for child seats fitted facing the rear of the vehicle.

2.1 Releasing and securing fabric seat cover

(Only necessary for installation of the four-point belt or for cleaning the fabric seat cover)

Position a rounded implement (e.g. spoon) under the fabric seat cover at the rear of the child seat backrest and carefully lever out the fastening clips.

Repeat the process at the front of the lower part of the seat. The fabric cover is secured again by simply pressing the clips back into their holes.

Important

Remove clip strips from the seat cover before cleaning it.

2.2 Fitting securing belts

Guide the upper loop (1) of the securing belt (2) through the slit in the lower part of the child seat in such a way that the lower loop (3) is positioned below the middle of the seat.

Pull the upper loop (1) from under the fabric cover to the seat backrest and guide the end of the belt below through the loop.

Attach the end of the belt to the clip/catch as shown in the illustration.

The second belt is fitted in the same way as above, though in mirror-image fashion.

2.3 Fitting the lap belt

Feed the end of the belt through the slit in the fabric seat cover and the lower part of the child seat in such a way that the belt catch (1) is positioned on the right-hand side (see illustration) and the release button (2) is facing upwards.

Pull the end of the belt through the loops (3) of the retaining belts and through the slit in the lower part of the seat and fabric seat cover.

Guide the end of the belt into the belt clip (4) as illustrated, at the same time pressing down the belt adjustment button (5).

2.4 Fitting the shoulder belt

Feed the ends of the belt through the slits in the backrest which correspond to the (shoulder) height of the child.

Attach the two guiding clips (1) to the belt and fit the shoulder belt securing piece (2) as illustrated, at the same time pressing down the belt adjustment button (3).

2.5 Adjusting the belt

Guide the shoulder belt clip (3) through the left and right securing pieces (1 and 2) and insert into the belt catch (4) to lock.

Important

If the securing pieces of the shoulder belt are not attached correctly, an in-built safety mechanism will prevent the belt clip from snapping into place.

Important

Make sure the lap belt is taut. The shoulder belt must not pull the lap belt upwards!

Tighten the belts by pressing the belt adjustment button (1) and at the same time pulling the ends of the belts (2).

The loose ends of the shoulder belt are then fed through the belt guiding clips (4).

The four-point belt is released by pressing the red button (3) on the lap belt catch.

3. Installing securing set to passenger seat

3.1 E31

In order to simplify the description of installation of the securing belts, the passenger seat is shown removed.

Remove compartment (1) carefully.

Unscrew Phillips screws (1).

Remove panel (2).

Installation information

The recesses (1) for the bracket are to be found under the seat pan.

Insert the bracket (1) as illustrated and secure with hexagon bolt (2) M 6×15 and washer.

Cut out pre-marked section (1) from the panel (2).

Install panel (1) according to illustration.

Secure belt connecting straps (2) to bracket (4) with bolts M 6×16 (3). Position the connecting straps in such a way that they face upwards to the outer edge of the seat.

3.2 E36

In order to simplify the description of installation of the securing belts, the passenger seat is shown removed.

Insert sheet-metal nuts (1) into the recess of the seat pan (2).

Secure belt connecting straps to seat with bolts M 6×16. Position the straps in such a way that they face upwards to the outer edge of the seat.

3.3 E23, E24, E28, E30, E32, E34

Pierce the fabric seat cover at the points intended for fire extinguisher attachment (1) (not necessary for all sports seats). Position the two plug-in nuts (2) on the seat frame.

Secure belt connecting straps to the seat with bolts M 6×16. Position the straps in such a way that they face upwards to the outer edge of the seat.

4. Fitting protective seat cover

For child seats fitted facing the rear of the vehicle, fit the protective seat cover as shown in the illustration. Guide the rubber straps around the backrest and head restraint.

Secure the cover at the rear of the seat using the clamping rings and pull until taut (see illustration). For child seats fitted in the rear passenger compartment, fit as above, securing the cover at the rear of the backrest.

Important

Make sure that no hard and/or sharp objects are stored in the pocket of the protective seat cover (otherwise risk of injury).

5. Installing child seat (facing rear of vehicle)

Adjust the position of the passenger seat so that it is as low and as far back as possible. The seat surface should be adjusted towards the front of the car and the backrest should be in an upright position.

Position the child seat so that its backrest is leaning against the dashboard. The load-securing straps should be hanging down over the front edge of the passenger seat.

Insert the clip of the belt connecting strap (1) into the belt catch (2).

Important

The belt connections must not be twisted or crossed over.

Now pull the belts so they are as taut as possible.

Move the passenger seat forward a little in order to tighten the securing belts further.

Important

Make sure the passenger seat adjustment has snapped into place and the head rests are pushed down fully.

6. Installing child seat (facing front of vehicle)

The child seat is installed on the rear seat bench connected to the three-point vehicle seat belt (whether the child seat is in use or not).

Usage with foam table

Pull loop to release the foam table fastener.

Snap the belt clip into place in the belt catch. Position the lap belt and shoulder belt in the foam table and guide the shoulder belt out of the centre of the table.

Important

Make sure that the seat belt is positioned correctly.

Close the foam table by reattaching the fastener and push the loop under the fabric seat cover. Adjust belts so that they are taut.

Usage without foam table

Snap belt clip into belt catch.

Make sure that the lap belt is positioned as low as possible and that all belts are taut.

Important

The shoulder belt must not pass across your child’s neck. Avoid this by passing the belt around side of vehicle seat backrest.

7. Fitting sun blind

Press the middle Velcro-type fastener of the sun blind onto the middle of the top of the backrest of the child seat (see illustration).

Press the two outer fasteners onto the child seat, making sure that the sun blind is taut.
