BMW Installation Instructions

Specialized knowledge is required.

Installation time: 5 – 6 hours – this may vary, depending on the condition of the vehicle and its fittings.

Note

Instructions and illustrations are given for left-hand drive models.

Drilling instructions

Burr bore holes and apply inorganic zinc.

Remove drillings completely.

Subsequently treat cavities with cavity sealant approved by vehicle manufacturer.

1. Cable Laying

To prevent faults, it is essential to adhere precisely to the designated cable-laying routes in the car. Under no circumstances work with so-called “Scotchlock quick connectors” as these can cause malfunctions in the car’s electrical system.

When laying cables in the car. ensure that they are not twisted or damaged. If the cables are damaged in any way, this could likewise cause faults which can only subsequently be located after extensive extra work. The costs generated in such a case will not be reimbursed by BMW.

2. Equipment Installation

Check the intended installation position before beginning work.

Only use installation parts approved by BMW.

1. Preparatory/Removal Tasks

  1. Remove rear seat bench.
  2. Disconnect battery.
  3. Remove driver’s and passenger seats.
  4. Remove left and right entrance strips.
  5. Detach door seals.
  6. Remove B-column panelling.
  7. Remove front left and right footwell panels.
  8. Expose left and right cable ducts.
  9. Remove left and right cable covers along rear bench and at central duct.
  10. Remove rear centre console.
  11. Remove gear-lever cover.
  12. Remove front left and right door trim panels.

2. Laying Supplementary Power-Supply Cable to Rear Support Point

(BMW 518 only)

Lay supplementary cable (1) from battery (2) in engine compartment into right footwell.

Lay supplementary cable (1) from right footwell into side cable duct.

Lay cable (1) towards rear into rear seat bench and screw to securing element (2). Attach securing element (2) to headless setscrew (3).

3. Laying Main Wiring Harness

Lay main wiring harness with white 6-pin socket housing (1) X316 from centre console towards rear to rear bench. Lay both receptacle housings (2) X10033 [red] and (3) X13026 [red/brown] towards steering wheel at front.

Following cables are laid in cable ducts along rear bench towards left:

Cables (1) [blue/red and black/red] to left A-column, cable (2) X13012 [violet/yellow] to ZV (central locking) module, cable (3) X492 [brown] to ground point (4), relay base (5) X13235 to relay securing point next to ZV module. Insert relay K78 (6).

Note

In cars with basic modules, relay K78 (6) must be inserted next to the basic module.

Withdraw white 26-pin connector (1) from ZV module, open and insert cable X13012 [violet/yellow] (2) into plug-in station 9.

Following cables are laid in cable ducts along rear bench towards right:

Cables (1) [blue/yellow and black/white] to right A-column, cable (2) X18067 [red] to positive terminal of battery (3) (terminal 30), cable (4) X495 [brown] to ground support point (5).

Note

Connect cable (2) X18067 to fuse if supplementary power-supply cable has been laid.

Remove hexagon screws (1).

Detach compact connector (2) from A-column.

Pull out locking slide (1).

Release cable plug-in connection (2).

Insert connector pins (2) of main wiring harness into compact connector (1) as follows:

Left A-column:

Station 3, cable blue/red Station 17, cable black/red.

Right A-column:

Station 3, cable blue/yellow Station 17, cable black/white.

4. Laying Door Wiring Harnesses

Release sleeves of left and right front doors.

Pull door wiring harness provided (1) through door and sleeve (2) up to compact connector (3). Insert connecting sockets (4) into compact connector (3) as follows:

Left:

Station 3, cable blue/red Station 17, cable black/red.

Right:

Station 3, cable blue/yellow Station 17, cable black/white.

Note

Only when complete door wiring harness is replaced.

Lay door wiring harness into door as shown in illustration.

5. Installing Switch Combination

Press out hazard-warning switch (1) from below in direction indicated by arrow. Carefully cut out area (2) and file down edges if necessary.

Attach white cable connector (1) to switch combination (2). Refit hazard-warning switch.

Note

The cable connectors (1) are shaped differently and only fit on the appropriate plug-in station.

Install switch combination.

Fit centre console.

6. Installing Thermostatic Switch

Cut out template (1) around edges.

Cut out rectangle (2) from template (1).

Template A = left-hand drive version.

Remove radio. Attach template (1), mark out area (2) and cut out.

Important

Cables are located behind the panel.

Note

The cutout area (2) for the thermostatic switch is premarked on the rear of the panel.

Insert rim (arrowed) into cutout area as shown in illustration.

Feed both cables (1) X10033 and X13026 through centre console into cutout area with rim (2) and connect to thermostatic switch (3). Push switch (3) into cutout area with rim (2) and snap into place.

7. Removing Left and Right Mechanical Window Lifts from Front Doors

Move window lift to position shown.

Lever out clips (1) in direction indicated by arrow.

Carefully lever out window lift (1) on left and right from clips (2).

Important

Hold window firmly.

Push window (1) up as far as it will go as shown in illustration and secure with adhesive tape (2).

Plastic clip (1) is attached to door trim panel. Remove hexagon screw (2). Bore out rivets (3). Remove window lift

(4).

8. Installing Left and Right Power-Window Mechanisms in Front Doors

Mark position of locking disc (1). Remove hexagon screw (2) and window stop (3).

Move ring gear (1) in direction indicated by arrow up to stop. Insert Torx screws (2), position electric motor (3) and tighten Torx screws (2).

Move ring gear (1) into position illustrated and install window stop (2).

Note

The electric motor must be connected to move the ring gear. If necessary, connect car battery and power window.

Install power-window mechanism (1) and secure with hexagon screws (2), washers (3) and hexagon nuts (4). Tighten hexagon screw (5).

Attach power-window connector (1) to receptacle (2) and slide into holder previously secured. Carefully lower power window.

Remove adhesive tape from window and install window.

Note

Only when complete door wiring harness is replaced.

Insert microswitch (1) and push on clip (2). The lock of the connector of the central-locking system from the old door wiring harness is used in the new door wiring harness. Connect power-window connector.

9. Adjusting Left and Right Windows in Front Doors

The window (1) must be parallel to the window frame and fit evenly in the seal (2).

Correction

Release hexagon screw (1). Raise power window completely and tighten hexagon screw (1). Raise and lower power window several times and check position of window. If necessary, release hexagon screw (1), move bar (2) as arrowed and tighten screw (1).

Raise power window completely and check position of window in rubber seal (2).

Note

The rubber seal must fit closely and evenly against the window.

Correction

Release hexagon screw (1).

Raise power window until rubber seal fits closely and evenly against window.

Tighten hexagon screw (1).

10. Installing Protective Caps in Door Trim Panels

Carefully bore open aperture (1) with a stepped drill bit. Insert protective cap (2) in aperture (1).

Install door trim panels in front doors.

Reinstall all parts which have been removed in reverse sequence.

Test power windows for correct operation.
