BMW Installation Instructions

(Only for use in BMW Dealer Organisation).

Installation time is approx. 3 – 4 hours, though this may vary depending on the condition of the vehicle and its fittings. Knowledge of electronics is required.

Certain work steps (installation and wiring) must be carried out in mirror-image fashion for right-hand drive models.

1. Necessary preliminary work at vehicle

  1. Print out fault memory (or memories).
  2. Disconnect vehicle battery (or batteries).
  3. Remove bottom-left panelling.
  4. Remove panelling at foot pedals.
  5. Remove speaker cover at bottom left in footwell.
  6. Remove centre of ventilation grille in dashboard.
  7. Remove A-column panelling.
  8. Remove entrance strips on left-hand side of vehicle.
  9. Detach panelling from left-hand lower area of B-column.
  10. Remove rear-seat bench or rear left-hand single seat.
  11. Remove backrest or rear left-hand single backrest.
  12. Open cable duct in left-hand side sill.
  13. Remove cover of equipment carrier at rear left in seat base.
  14. Remove basic module and relay module and detach equipment carrier.
  15. Remove left-hand luggage-compartment panelling.
  16. Remove wiring-harness covers on left in luggage compartment.

Note

For vehicles with standard-fitted engine- compartment contact switch at left-hand locking bracket, engine-compartment contact switch must be installed at right-hand locking bracket.

Important

The AMP connectors included in the installation kit must be used when establishing electrical connections.

Cut through cables and crimp on AMP contacts. Insulate and tie back all cables which are not required.

When connecting contacts B5a and B5b, ensure that branch B5b is connected to the cable which leads to the basic module.

Installation information

Supplementary wiring harness is laid from seat base at rear left next to centre tunnel, towards front of vehicle and towards rear into luggage compartment.

Branch A22 is laid along vehicle wiring harness into luggage compartment.

Branches A14, A16, A24, C, D, G and H are laid along vehicle wiring harness into footwell at front left.

Important

Owing to the continuous revision of the electrical systems of individual models, connector designations (X-designations) and cable colours are subject to change. The latest edition of the test instructions is therefore required for installing the alarm system.

4. Installing large siren (variant C)

Note

The large or small siren is installed according to the national market.

Installation information

Secure siren so that it is not in contact with any other components.

If the siren is not being installed at the suggested installation point, ensure that the selected location interferes with neither the engine cooling system nor the closing of the engine-compartment cover.

Siren is installed on left at front of engine compartment. Remove hexagon nuts (1) from bracket (2) of expansion tank (3) of power steering system.

Note

Right-hand headlight cover is no longer required. Remove right-hand headlight cover.

If necessary, adjust bracket (1) and fit as shown in illustration.

Dimension A = 65 mm

Dimension B = 5 mm

Mark out bore points (2).

Mark with centre punch marked-out bore points (2) and drill through with twist drill, bit dia. 6 mm.

Burr and prime edges of bore holes.

Connect bracket (2) from installation kit to siren (1). Attach hexagon nuts (3).

Position bracket and siren (1) and secure with hexagon bolts (2), washers (3) and hexagon nuts (4).

Position bracket and siren (1) in such a way that siren lock points in direction of engine and is freely accessible from above. Secure bracket and siren (1).

5. Installing small siren (variant B) (alternative)

Note

If the large siren (variant C) is replaced with the small siren (variant B), the emergency-release lock must be installed, the siren wiring harness cut at the siren and the (supplied) 8-pin cable connector connected to the siren wiring harness according to the following table:

Installation information

If the siren is not being installed at the suggested installation point, ensure that the selected location interferes with neither the engine cooling system nor the closing of the engine-compartment cover.

Secure siren (1) with toothed lock washer (3) and hexagon nut (4) to bracket (2) as shown in illustration.

Secure siren (1) so that it is not in contact with any other components. Align bore holes (6) as shown in illustration. Secure siren (1) with hexagon bolts (3), toothed lock washers (4) and hexagon nuts (5) through bore holes (6) as shown in illustration.

Lay siren connecting cable along vehicle wiring harness to distribution box.

6. Connecting siren wiring harness

Remove retainer from engine-bonnet locking device. Remove upper section of distribution box.

Remove hexagon bolt (1).

Remove Torx screws (2) and press cable channel and wiring harness into distribution box.

Lay siren wiring harness through distribution box into passenger compartment.

Lay branch A24 for engine-compartment contact switch through distribution box into engine compartment.

Note

If necessary, detach cable straps from vehicle wiring harness.

Installation information

Ensure that all seals at distribution box are sealing correctly. If necessary, seal up leaks with silicone sealant.

Note

Emergency-release lock is required only for installation of small siren (variant B).

When installing large siren (variant C), contacts (10) (with same colour sequence as listed in table below) and mating connectors must be plugged into connector (1) of alarm-system wiring harness.

Install emergency-release lock at a suitable location (e.g. glove compartment) and lay connecting cable to cable connector (1) of siren wiring harness (2) on left in footwell. Strip insulation from cable ends of siren wiring harness (2).

Connect connecting cable (9) number 1 of emergency- release-lock wiring harness (3) and fuse carrier (11) to red connecting cable (8) of siren wiring harness (2) as shown in illustration and crimp on plug-in contact (10). Plug fuse (12) into fuse carrier (11) and attach protective cap (13).

Connect connecting cable (6) number 2 of emergency- release-lock wiring harness (3) to red/black connecting cable (7) of siren wiring harness (2) and crimp on plugin contact (10).

Connect connecting cables (4 and 5) numbers 3 and 4 of emergency-release-lock wiring harness (3) to suitable earth supports.

Note

Connecting cables (4 and 5) numbers 3 and 4 of emergency-release-lock wiring harness (3) should, if possible, be connected to two different earth supports. Crimp one plug-in contact (10) onto each of remaining cable ends of siren wiring harness (2).

7. Installing ultrasonic sensors

Mark out bore point (1) at same height as centre of bore hole (2) at a distance A = 15 mm on ceiling vehicle rooflining (3).

Important

Diameter of bore hole is 3 mm.

Drill through marked-out bore point (1) and prime under vehicle rooflining.

The cables of the ultrasonic sensors are colour-coded. Red marking = A-column, driver side White marking = A-column, passenger side

Installation information

Lay connecting cable of ultrasonic sensor (on right- hand side) under vehicle rooflining (on left-hand side) and lay via left-hand A-column into footwell.

Secure ultrasonic sensor (1) with Phillips screw (2) at corresponding A-column.

Lay cables of ultrasonic sensors (1) as far as left-hand footwell.

8. Installing LED

Mark bore point (2) on rear side of centre of ventilation grille (1) as follows:

Mark extension of edge (3) along centre of ventilation grille (1).

Measure out centre line between air ducts (4) and mark out on centre of ventilation grille (1).

Important

Diameter of bore hole is 8 mm.

Drill through bore point (2).

Insert LED (1) from above into centre of ventilation grille (2).

Important

Make sure that LED is positioned securely.

Lay LED cable as far as left-hand footwell and install centre of ventilation grille (2).

Insert cable in housing (D) with same colour sequence as mating connector at alarm-system wiring harness.

9. Installing engine-compartment contact switch

Important

Branch A24 (brown/black cable) must not be connected at existing engine-bonnet contact switch.

Note

If an engine-bonnet contact switch is installed on left- hand side of vehicle, the engine-bonnet contact switch is installed accordingly on right-hand vehicle side.

Important

When assembling locking bracket (1), ensure that earth terminal (2) is connected to earth.

Install locking bracket (1) according to marking and, in doing so, secure earth terminal (2) with one of the two hexagon nuts (3) and connect to engine-compartment contact switch (4).

Unclip yellow 26-pin connector X255 (1) from control- unit bracket at rear left in seat base.

A1 Connect branch for door contact switch, driver side, brown/grey cable, to cable of plug-in station No. 15, brown/grey/yellow cable.

A17 Connect branch for central locking system (central locking), yellow/blue cable, to cable of plug-in station No. 7, white/red/yellow cable.

Note

If plug-in station No. 7 is occupied, branch A17 is connected with (supplied) parallel connector.

A18 Branch for central locking system (open), green/ blue cable, to cable of plug-in station No. 16, blue/red/yellow cable.

Note

If plug-in station No. 16 is occupied, branch A18 is connected with (supplied) parallel connector.

A23 Branch for rear door contact switch, brown/violet cable, to cable of plug-in station No. 3, brown/violet/yellow cable.

B5 Branch for central locking system (open

synchronisation), white/green cable. Cut through connecting cable of plug-in station No. 17, white/green/yellow. Connect branch B5a to cable end which leads to vehicle wiring harness. Connect branch B5b to cable end which leads to basic module.

11. Installing central alarm unit

Insert, hold and align central alarm unit (1) in rear-left seat base. Mark bore points for screws (2) first with a marker pen and then with a centre punch.

Important

Diameter of bore hole is 3 mm.

Drill through marked-out bore points and screw down central alarm unit (1) securely with screws (2) and metal nuts (3).

Connect battery.

Program anti-theft alarm system in accordance with both customer and legal requirements (see programming manual supplied with programming unit for digital anti-theft alarm system).

Note

For vehicles equipped with power windows and/or electrically operated sunroof, automatic closing on activation of anti-theft alarm system takes place only when ultrasonic monitoring is switched on.
