BMW D-Netz Mobile Telephone BMW 3 Series E36/5 (Compact)

Intended for use in BMW dealer organisation only. Installation time is approx. 4 – 5 hours, though this may vary depending on the condition of the vehicle and its fittings. Specialised knowledge is required.

Note

Installation is described for left-hand drive models. Certain work steps must be carried out in mirror-image fashion for right-hand drive models.

Drilling instructions

De-burr bores as necessary and treat with the usual BMW rust prevention measures.

Laying cables

When laying cables, always start from the luggage compartment.

Adhere exactly to the designated cable paths in the vehicle to avoid malfunction.

Ensure that cables are not twisted, kinked or damaged while laying, as this may also result in malfunction.

Tie back cables which are too long with the cable straps provided.

1. Necessary Preliminary Work

  1. Print out fault memory
  2. Disconnect battery

Connecting cable 4:

Lay from transceiver H38 (2) along the vehicle wiring harness, through the cable entry grommet into the passenger compartment and to the telephone support (5).

Power supply cable 3:

From transceiver H38 (2) along the vehicle wiring harness, through the cable entry grommet into the passenger compartment and to the left-hand fan connector box (6) with branch (7) to the telephone support I eject-box (5).

Note

You can see the wiring diagram for the connections of the hands-free facility from the installation instructions, which are enclosed with the hands-free facility installation kit.

4. Installing Transceiver

Connect transceiver (1) with connecting cable (2) and aerial cable (3). Fit this assembly into the transceiver support (4).

Close the transceiver support as shown in the illustration.

Secure the transceiver support with split rivets and plastic nut.

5. Installing Supplementary Wiring Harnesses

Connect the connecting cable (1) and to the power supply cable (2) and lay along the vehicle wiring harness into the passenger compartment.

Connect branch 82, terminal 31 (brown) at fan connector X 13007.

Lay connecting cable and power supply cable as shown in the illustration.

Connecting cable (1) ends in the centre console. The power supply cable (2) is laid further to the left fan connector box (3) and to the right fan connector box (4). The power supply cable is to be connected as described in the Overview of Supplementary Wiring Harness section on page 4.

6. Installing Telephone

Attach template (2) to centre console (1) as shown in the illustration. Cut out marked areas (3) from centre console.

Guide connecting cable with connector (1) from below through the centre console.

Secure telephone connector (1) with 2 oval-head screws (2) below the retaining plate for the telephone (3).

Screw support for telephone (1) with 4 oval-head screws M4X10 (2) to the retaining plate from below. Connect the telephone receiver cable (4) with connector.

Insert cover flap (1). Carefully snap retaining plate (2) into the centre console.

Clip telephone (3) into telephone support (1).

7. Installing Eject-Box

(Only with corresponding installation kit)

Attach template (2) as shown to centre console (1). Cut out marked areas (3) from centre console.

Make the following connections from below through the centre console:

Eject-box 10-pin black connector A 117 to 10-pin, black branch 86 of the power supply cable.

Eject-box 8-pin connector to the telephone connector of the connecting cable.

Using 2 oval-head screws M4X30, attach the connecting cable connector (1) below the eject-box holder (2).

Screw on eject-box (2).

Carefully snap the eject-box (3) into the holder, taking care not to break off the retaining lugs.

Eject-box cable connections not shown.

Snap eject-box with holder (1) into place on the centre console (2) and clip on the eject-box panelling (3).

Connect the telephone (4) at the eject box.

Important!

Instructions for removal of eject-box (must be followed)

If the eject-box must be removed: Remove eject-box panelling.

Remove front ashtray.

Clip out the holder with the eject-box from the centre console.

The eject-box can then carefully be released from the holder, otherwise the small

retaining lugs could break off.

8. Installing Hands-Free Facility*

Lay the connecting cable {1) from the centre console

to the speakers (2) and microphone (3) as shown in the illustration. Connect the 4-pin black connector (cable colours brown and white) with the end of the connecting cable from the telephone in the centre console.

Important

When installing the microphone , the arrow on the microphone must point up.

Install the microphone (1) in the switch holders (2) and connect it with the 4-pin black connector C2.

Replace the radio speaker (1) with the hands-free facility double-spooled speaker (2). Note the installation position.
