BMW Installation Instructions

(For use in the BMW dealer organisation only.) Installation time is approx. 0.5 hours, though this may vary depending on the condition of the vehicle and its fittings. Knowledge of electrical systems is required.

Note

Lay the cables so that they can be neither kinked or crushed.

Case 1: When an IRIS radio is replaced by another IRIS radio, the appropriate IRIS control unit must be ordered separately.

Case 2: When an IRIS radio is replaced by an MID radio, the MID audio control unit – if no other MID dependent system (telephone, on-board computer, digital sound processor) is to be retrofitted – and the MID operating instructions must be ordered separately.

Case 3: When an MID radio is replaced by another

MID radio, the MID control unit already in the vehicle

– if no other MID-dependent system (telephone, on board computer, digital sound processor) is to be retrofitted – continues in use.

Case 4: When the standard radio BMW Reverse RDS is replaced by an IRIS or MID radio, the appropriate IRIS or MID control unit, the appropriate IRIS or MID operating instructions and the IRIS/MID adaptor cable must be ordered separately.

1. Introduction

The radios listed here are series-specific for the new BMW 5 Series (E39). For retrofitting, the following are offered:

  • BMW Business RDS
  • BMW Business CD RDS
  • BMW Professional RDS

These radios can be controlled only by means of an external control unit (Integrated Radio Information System, IRIS or Multi-Information Display, MID). The various IRIS or MID control units are listed in the Electronic Parts Catalogue (EPC).

The BMW Reverse RDS radio is standard (current sales information for new-vehicle sales is applicable) and is operated like a conventional radio. The BMW Business RDS radio is standard or, depending on country-specific fittings, fitted to 100% of cars for certain vehicle models (refer to sales information).

The Business radios can be controlled by means of an IRIS control unit or, according to vehicle fittings (telephone, on-board computer, digital sound processor), also by means of an MID control unit.

The Professional radio must be controlled by means of an MID control unit independently of the mentioned vehicle fittings.

The control unit used determines the name of the radio, i.e. IRIS Radio or MID Radio. In addition,

language-specific operating instructions for the IRIS Radio or for the MID Radio must be ordered

separately on a case-by-case basis.

2. Vehicle Preparation – Removal

Print out fault memories.

Disconnect battery

Remove glove compartment and panel below glove compartment (only in case 4, see above).

Remove centre console panel, passenger side (only in case 4, see above).

Remove complete radio.

5. Coding

Case 1:

When an IRIS radio is replaced by another IRIS radio, the appropriate IRIS control unit must be ordered separately.

Coding is not applicable to the new radio system.

Case 2:

When an IRIS radio is replaced by an MID radio, the MID audio control unit – if no other MID-dependent system (telephone, on-board computer, digital sound processor) is to be retrofitted – must be ordered separately.

Coding is applicable to the new radio system.

Case 3:

When an MID radio is replaced by another MID radio, the MID control unit already in the vehicle – if no other MID-dependent system (telephone, on-board

computer, digital sound processor) is to be retrofitted – can continue in use.

Coding is not applicable to the new radio system.

Case 4:

When the standard radio BMW Reverse RDS is replaced by an IRIS or MID radio, t e appropriate IRIS or MID control unit and the IRIS/MID adaptor cable must be ordered separately.

Coding is not applicable to the new radio system with IRIS control unit.

Coding is applicable to the new radio system with MID control unit.

To ensure that the coding-dependent retrofit system:

is fully operational

excludes the possibility of malfunctions and faults in conjunction with the other electrical vehicle systems

this system and possibly other vehicle control units

must be coded.

In addition, it is stored in the central coding key of the instrument cluster electronics (IKE). This coding is carried out automatically with the respective current coding program in the “Retrofit” path. The procedure is user-guided; the respective text instructions must be followed when carrying out the individual steps (from coding program ZCS V 15.0).

Procedure:

Connect DIS/MoDiC to the vehicle

Ignition “ON”

Select “Coding ZCS (Central Coding Key)” Confirm entry date with “Y” (only for MoDiC) Series: “E39”

Path: “2 Retrofit”

System: “8 Radio C34 Professional” (“8 Radio with MID” from 03.96)

Start automatic coding (confirm with “Y”) Ignition OFF, wait at least 1O seconds and then ignition ON again

Print out coding label and attach in right side of luggage compartment to frame rail near battery beside existing coding label.

Note

In contrast to the program specification “8 Radio C34 Professional”, the procedure is applicable to all radios requiring initial use of an MID.

From 3.96 (coding C 7.0), the program specification “8 Radio with MID” will be displayed under “System”.

Carry out operation test.
