  3. Put on the cover strip
  4. Mount the roof-rack superstructure

General Notes

If the roof rack is damaged, its repair or replacement of the damaged part must be made exclusively by the BMW dealer.

If the mounting is done wrongly, damage to the vehicle roof is possible.

To make the mounting of the roof rack easier, it should be done with the help of another person.

Safety Information

The permitted roof load of 75 kg may not be exceeded.

(Weight of both carriers 5 kg plus superstructure plus actual load)

Mounting is to be carried out in accordance with the fitting instructions.

The roof rack carriers are preset in the factory exactly to the roof width of your vehicle. Under no circumstances may this presetting be altered.

When the sealed screws are opened, any warranty is extinguished.

Note that the vehicle handling changes according to the load being transported.

As far as possible avoid sudden braking, acceleration from rest and fast cornering.

When a load is being transported on the roof, speed has to be adjusted to actual conditions such as state of the roads, road surface, cross-wind conditions, general traffic conditions, etc. We recommend the advisory speed.

Country-specific regulations are to be observed.

Before each journey all screw fittings and connections on the base carrier and superstructure are to be checked to make sure they are firmly seated and should be tightened as necessary.

Distribute pieces of luggage evenly, keep the centre of gravity as low as possible and secure transported items with suitable straps to stop them from slipping.

The legal regulations for motor vehicle construction and use are to be complied with for roof transportation.

When not in use, the roof rack carriers should be removed from the vehicle for reasons of fuel economy and the safety of other road users.

Do not go through the car wash with the roof-rack carriers mounted.

The roof rack carriers are preset in the factory exactly to the roof width of your vehicle. Under no circumstances may this presetting be altered.

When the sealed screws are opened, any warranty is extinguished.

A sticker is attached to the inside of the support feet which marks the mounting place on the vehicle in the direction of travel.

Note

Clean the roof in the area of the roof-rack support. Only BMW recommended and issued cleaning agents,

waxes and polishes may be used. Unsuitable materials may give rise to paint discoloration in the area of contact of the rubber plates.

1. Position the roof rack

A mounting template is included in the supply kit. This is used to position the roof rack exactly on the roof of the vehicle.

F 36 82 682

The template (1) is to be placed between roof and rain channel with the tip of the arrow towards the front in the direction of travel. In doing so, care should be taken to see that the black marking (2) is located above the joint between side window and B-pillar.

Position the feet (3) of the roof rack so that they abut the ends of the template. Check the attachment points once more using the measurements A and B.

A = 380 mm
B = 180 mm

Caution

If the mounting is done wrongly, damage to the vehicle roof is possible.

Note

After using the template (1) for positioning, keep it in a safe place (e.g. in the vehicle) for use on the next occasion.

2. Attach the roof rack

The roof rack has been pre-tensioned to a certain extent in the factory. This can be seen in the slightly bowed contour of the roof-rack profile.

F 36 82 683

The foot of the roof rack with its rubber-clad base plate stands exactly on the contour of the roof of the vehicle. The claw engages into the outer edge of the roof as illustrated. Use the coded screws (1) and the key (2) contained in the supply kit to screw tight the support feet thus positioned on both sides . To do this, tighten the screws (1) to the same amount alternately on each side of the front and rear rack support. The support

feet are thus evenly mounted and are made theft-proof by means of the coded screw (1) .

Note

It is essential to make sure that the rubber-clad base plate (3) lines up exactly to the contour (4) of the vehicle roof (see magnification) .

F 36 82 684

The roof-rack carriers (1) must be screwed down with the coded screws in such a way that the upper edge of the support forms more or less a straight line and not a bow shape. The roof rack is thus tensioned firmly on the vehicle roof.

Caution

Check the roof rack for a firm seating on the vehicle roof.

3. Put on the cover strip

F 30 82 061

Press the plastic strip (1) into the carrier (2).

Note

The plastic strip protects the carrier against contamination and prevents wind noise when no superstructure is mounted.

4. Mount the roof-rack superstructure

F 30 82 062

To mount roof-rack superstructures remove the plastic strips and open the cover flaps (1) as illustrated. Slide roof-rack superstructures into the profile rails of the carrier (2) and fasten. Close the cover flaps (1).

Caution

In fitting and fastening roof-rack superstructures please observe the relevant fitting instructions.
