BMW Installation Instructions
If fitting is carried out in the workshops the fitting instructions must be handed to the customer.
The working steps and safety advice enumerated in these fitting instructions for first fitting, extensi on, re-fitting and handling of the roof rack must be unconditionally complied with.
The roof rack is so constructed that with proper fit ting and operation no damage can result to the vehicle.
BMW accepts no liability for damage which occurs as a result of not following the work sequence and safety instructions. In addition, any warranty claim against BMW AG is extinguished in the event of improper fitting and handling which diverges from the fitting and operating instructions.
Notes on safety
The permitted roof load of 75 kg may not be excee ded.
(Weight of both carriers 4.4 kg plus superstructure plus actual load)
Mounting is to be carried out in accordance with the fitting instructions.
Note that vehicle handling changes according to the load being transported.
As far as possible avoid sudden braking, acceleration from rest and fast cornering.
When a load is being transported on the roof, speed has to be adjusted to actual conditions such as state of the roads, road surface, cross-wind conditions, general traffic conditions, etc. We recommend the advisory speed.
Country-specific regulations are to be observed.
Before each journey all screw fittings and connections on the base carrier and superstructure are to be checked to make sure they are firmly seated and should be tightened as necessary.
Distribute pieces of luggage evenly, keep the centre of gravity as low as possible and secure transported items with suitable straps to stop them from slipping.
The legal regulations for motor vehicle construction and use are to be complied with for roof transportati on.
When not in use, the roof rack carriers should be removed from the vehicle for reasons of fuel economy and the safety of other road users.
Do not go through the car wash with the roof-rack carriers mounted.
Before mounting the roof rack for the first time a basic adjustment of it must be made in order to match the support feet to the width of the vehicle.
If the mounting is done wrongly, damage to the vehicle roof is possible.
To make the mounting of the roof rack easier, it should be done with the help of another person.
Keep the enclosed “safety pass” with the letter code in a safe place to enable an additional order of the coded special key to be made at your BMW dealer.

1. Use of the special key
F 36 82 867
Two special keys are contained in the supply kit.
Special key I is used to undo and to tighten the socket-head screws when the basic adjustment of the front and rear carriers is being made, and also to tigh ten the clamping screws when the front carrier is being mounted.
Special key II is used on the one hand to tighten the coded screws and on the other hand, with the aid of the hook (1) attached to the handle, to assist removal of the two covering caps.
The special key II has a positioning aid in the form of an engraved arrow (2). This arrow exists similarly on the coded screws. When both arrows are aligned, the special key II can be put on the coded screws with out hindrance.
2. Basic adjustment of the front carrier
A sticker is attached to the inner side of the support feet, which identifies the mounting position on the vehicle in the direction of travel.
F 36 82 166
Loosen the socket-head screws (1) with the enclosed special key I(2) on both sides and adjust the support feet (3) symmetrically to the width of the vehicle.
F 36 82 167
Open the vehicle door s. Fold down the door rubber seal (1) and slide the support feet (3) on to the retai ning bolts (2) in the direction of the arrow as shown in the illustration.
Lightly screw up the socket-head screws (see illustra tion F 36 82 166) on both sides. Withdraw the support feet (3) from the retaining bolts (2) and take off the carrier. Finally tighten the socket-head screws.
The support feet must be able to slide freely on to the retaining bolts after the basic adjustment.
3. Mount the front carrier
F 36 82 662
Fold down door rubber seal (1), put carrier on and tighten clamping screws (2) with enclosed special key I (4) on both support feet (3).
4. Remove covering cap for rear carrier
To mount the rear carrier it is necessary to remove the covering caps on the vehicle roof.
F 36 82 868
Pull off covering caps (1) on both sides upwards using the hook (2) attached to the special key II. To do this, insert the hook into the drilled hole in the covering
cap. Keep both covering caps safely in the glove box.
After taking the rear carrier off, put both covering caps on again to avoid wind noise.
5. Basic adjustment of the rear carrier
A sticker is attached to the inner side of the support feet which identifies the mounting position in the direction of travel.
Loosen socket-head screws on both sides (see illust ration F 36 82 166) and adjust the support feet sym metrically to the width of the vehicle.
F 36 82 170
Put on carrier (1) and move the support feet (3) so that they lie stress-free on the edge of the side frame (2). Tighten socket-head screws on both sides (see illust ration F 36 82 166). Remove carrier (1) and tighten socket-head screws.
To avoid damage to the vehicle roof, after the basic adjustment has been made the support feet (3) must lie stress-free on the side-frame edge (2).
6. Mount the rear carrier
F 36 82 869
Put the tensioning claw (1) on in such a way that it grips under the outer edge of the roof above the rear side window. Then, by means of the coded screw and special key II (2), screw it firmly to the support foot (3) and tighten, as shown in the illustration.
7. Attach cover strip
F 30 82 061
Press plastic strip (1) into the carrier (2).
The plastic strip stops the carrier from getting clog ged up and prevents wind noise when no superstruc ture is fitted.
8. Mount carrying superstructure
F 30 82 062
For mounting carrying superstructures, remove the plastic strip and open the covering caps (1) as shown in the illustration. Slide the carrying superstructure
into the profiled guide of the carrier (2) and secure it. Close the covering caps (1).
When mounting and securing carrying superstructu res, please take note of the relevant fitting instructions.
