Installation kit Skibag for BMW 5 Series touring (E39/2)

BMW Installation Instructions

Installation of the skibag in the vehicle should be car­ ried out by a BMW specialist workshop.

Installation time approx. 1.5 hours, which can vary according to the conditions and fittings of the vehicle.

Required tools

  • Socket-screw key 4.5 mm
  • 3/8reversible ratchet with extension
  • 3/8″ hexagon spanner socket SW 17
  • 1/4″ reversible ratchet with extension
  • 1/4″ hexagon spanner socket SW 1O
  • Flat-tip screwdriver
  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Sharp knife
  • Torque spanner

1. Dismantle rear seat bench

Unclip the covering caps (1) of the rear seat bench attachment on both sides.

Undo the screws (1) of the rear seat bench attach­ ment (2) on both sides with the aid of a hexagon socket screw key. Then remove the screws (1) as well as the rear seat bench attachments.

Fold the rear seat bench (1) up and unscrew the scr­ ews (2) of the seat belt (3). Draw the seat belt (3) back through the rear seat bench.

Remove the rear seat bench from the vehicle.

Note

With later assembly, the screws of the safety belt must be tightened with 48 Nm.

2. Dismantle side parts

Undo the mounting screws (1) of the side parts below (see magnification). Then unclip the side parts (2) above in the direction of the arrow and remove them from the vehicle.

3. Dismantle 2/3 backrest part

Fold over forwards the 1/3 and 2/3 backrest parts

of the rear seat bench. Undo the socket screw (1) of the retaining bracket (2) and remove the retaining bracket (2) of the 2/3 backrest part.

Undo the socket screws (1) (see magnification) of the centre retaining bracket (2) and remove the retaining bracket.

Remove the 2/3 backrest part (3) from the vehicle.

4. Remove trim panel on rear of backrest

Unfold armrest of the 2/3 backrest part. Pull away tex­ tile covering (1) and remove closing panel (2).

Note

Closing panel (2) is no longer required.

Loosen plastic strip (1) and remove from the 2/3 backrest part.

Note

The plastic strip (1) is no longer required.

Remove the covering cap (1) of the backrest lock.

Note

Replace the covering cap (1) with the jointly-ordered new colourbound covering cap.

Screw off the journal (1).

Loosen the trim panel (2) of rear of backrest of the 2/3 part with the aid of a flat-tip screwdriver and remove it.

Note

The removed trim panel (2) from rear of backrest is no longer required.

5. Trim cover cloth

The cover cloth (2) underneath the centre head rest is to be pulled away carefully in the direction of the arrow with the aid of a flat-tip screwdriver (1) and rai­sed up.

Take out the pre-punched foam-rubber rectangle (1) lying underneath (see dotted line).

Replace the cover cloth and make a cut with a sharp knife in the area (1) of the removed foam-rubber rec­ tangle (see illustration F 39 72 055).

Take the jointly-ordered colourbound pushpiece (1) for opening the skibag cover and insert it from above until it audibly engages.

6. Insert skibag cassette

Carefully bend upwards the fastening clips (1) located in the frame of the 2/3 backrest part.

Secure the safety strap (1) of the skibag to the frame of the 2/3 backrest part with the supplied Phillips countersunk screw (2).

Insert the skibag cassette (1) with its guides (2) into the frame of the 2/3 backrest part and then swing it completely in the direction of the arrow until it audibly engages. Bend the fastening clips back down (see illustration F 39 72 058).

Note

When clipping the cassette in, care should be taken

to see that the safety strap of the skibag does not get caught in between the skibag cassette and the frame of the 2/3 back rest part.

Place the jointly-ordered colourbound trim panel for the rear of the backrest (1) on the frame from above and clip it in.

Screw on the journal (2) again.

Note

When doing so, care should be taken to see that in the marked area (3) the centring stud of the backrest rear trim panel (1) is inserted in the drill hole designed for it.

Reassemble the vehicle in the reverse order of disas­ sembly.
