BMW Installation Instructions
Technical knowledge is required.
Installation time approx. 3 hours, which can vary according to the condition and fittings of the vehicle. Electrical knowledge is required.
If the towing hitch has been retrofitted, final inspection is required in the Federal Republic of Germany at the Technical Inspecting Agency (TUV) in accordance with § 19 (2) of the German Road Traffic Licensing Regulations, and an appropriate entry is made in the car papers.
All tasks are described as for left-hand drive models. On right-hand drive models, the various tasks must be executed as a mirror image.
Using a putty knife, sealing compound and underbody sealant are to be removed from all surfaces on the body where the towing hitch is to be mounted.These surfaces are then to be cleaned using benzene. Bare places on the body are to be coated with corrosion protection paint. Refer to the car papers for the maximum permissible trailer load.
Refer to the instruction manual for the towing hitch for advice on care and maintenance.
Trim the edges of all holes and coat them with corrosion protection paint. Remove all traces of drilling chips.
- All screws and nuts to be set in by hand and initially to be tightened loosely.
- Line up towing hitch and holder for the ball.
- Tighten screws and nuts in the following sequence:
- Flanged nuts for towing hitch / rear panel
- Hexagon-head screws M10 longitudinal struts / boot

1. Necessary preparatory work
- Print out error memory.
- Remove both side flaps in boot.
- Remove covering for boot floor.
- Remove spare wheel.
- Remove cover strip from boot sill.
- Remove storage compartment for tool kit.
- Dismantle the two plastic supports for boot-floor covering on the right longitudinal carrier.
- Remove rear bumper.
- Remove impact absorber.
- Dismantle cover for radio (only if there is an on-board monitor).
- Remove covering in boot floor to left.
- Dismantle plastic support for boot-floor covering on left longitudinal carrier.
- Dismantle carjack.

3. Fit supplementary wiring harness

Using a step drill, open up a hole of 40 mm at the punched point (1) on the closing panel under the right rear light.Trim it and treat it with the customary BMW rust inhibitor.

Install branch cables A and C to I of the supplementary wiring harness (1) through the lead- through (2) into the boot and press in the rubber grommet. Make two holes (3) of 5 mm on the crosspiece of the closing panel, as illustrated, and secure the supplementary wiring harness (1) with cable straps (4).

The bracket for the trailer module A6 is already in position in vehicles which have air suspension.
Place the control box (1), as shown, against the longitudinal carrier from below in the boot to the right and press in and down in the direction of the arrow until the detent of the control box (1) engages with the bracket (3) on the battery tray.
Open the cover of the control box (1).

Connect branch cable F, cable colour blue/brown/yellow, to the tied-back white 1-contact pin housing X1276 (1) and fasten it to the vehicle wiring harness (2).

Install branch cable C to fuse holder above the battery. C Connect branch cable “terminal 30”, cable colour red, to plug-in place 5 (F103 / 50 A fuse) using hexagon nut (2).
Secure supplementary wiring harness (4) with cable straps (3).

Install branch cable A to control box (2) under the right-hand side longitudinal carrier.
A Connect branch cable “X609” to trailer module A6. Place trailer module A6 (1) and supplementary wiring harness (3) in position as illustrated and close control box (2).

The illustration shows the connection to the left rear light, proceed similarly for connection to the right- hand rear light.
Install branch cables G to I along the vehicle wiring harness to the left rear light E46 (3) and remove socket housing X319 (1) from the left rear light E46 (3).
G Connect branch cable “earth”, cable colour brown, to ground post X19518 (2).
H Connect branch cable “X319” to the socket housing X319 (1) which has been removed from the left rear light E46 (3).
I Connect branch cable “X18976” to left rear light E46 (3).
Install branch cables D and E to the right-hand rear light E47 and remove socket housing X318 from the right rear light E47.
D Connect branch cable “X318” to socket housing X318 which has been removed from the right-hand rear light E47.
E Connect branch cable “X18977” to right-hand rear light E47.
4. Fit towing hitch

Push brackets (1) into the left and right longitudinal carriers and fasten loosely with the reinforcement brackets (2) and hexagon-head screws with pads (3).

Insert support (1) for ball hitch (3), as illustrated, in the boot on the right, straighten it up and fasten loosely with hexagon-head screw (2) and pad to the longitudinal carrier.
Straighten up the under-part of the support (4) and fasten with hexagon-head screw (5). Insert ball hitch (3) into the underpart of the support and fasten with retaining strap (6).

Attach support (2) for socket to the base carrier (1) of the towing hitch with hexagon-head screws (3). Tightening torque: 10 Nm.

Remove outer skin panel (1) from the support (2) of the bumper.
Cut outer skin panel (1) and support (2) of the bumper at the prestamped places (3 and 4). Reassemble bumper.

Hold the reinforcement for the bumper (1) against the bumper lining (2), mark drill holes (3) and take the reinforcement for the bumper (1) away. Put speed nuts (4) on both sides of the bumper lining (2). Hold reinforcement for the bumper (1) against the bumper lining (2) and secure with hexagon-head self-tapping screws (5) and plastic rivets (6).

Insert base carrier (1) of the towing hitch in the bumper (2) and fasten loosely with hexagon-head screws (3).
Loosely attach the bumper (2), with base carrier (1) of the towing hitch, to the vehicle with flanged nuts and pads.
Straighten up towing hitch.
Tighten screws and nuts in the following sequence:
- Flanged nuts towing hitch / tail panel
- Hexagon-head screws M10 longitudinal strut / boot tightening torque: 60 Nm
- Straighten up bumper (2) and secure with hexagon-head screws (3).
5. Stick on noseweight sticker and operating instructions sticker

Stick on noseweight sticker max. 90 kg at position 1.

Stick operating instructions sticker (1) for ball hitch on to the dismantled right plastic support (2) for the boot- floor covering.
Re-assembly is done in the reverse order of disassembly.
6. Functional check
- Remove dummy plug.
- Insert ball into housing;
check for easy action when locking in, snug fit of the ball and signs of correct locking:
-Marking “green” on handwheel stands against area “green” on the ball.
-Handwheel adjacent to the ball.
-Key can be removed after closing.
- Remove ball;
It must loosen of its own accord after turning the handwheel.
Check for arresting of handwheel when the system is in tightened setting.
- Replace dummy plug;
Dummy plug must sit tight.
After coupling a trailer, operation of the trailer lighting and the direction-indicator lights is to be checked. The power supply (terminal 30) at terminal pin 9 on the 13-contact socket housing is switched on only when the trailer is connected.
This system is not coding-relevant.
