The working steps and safety advice enumerated in these installation instructions for first fitting, extension, re-fitting and handling of the roof rack must be unconditionally complied with.

The roof rack is so constructed that with proper fit ting and operation no damage can result to the vehicle.

BMW accepts no liability for damage which occurs as a result of not following the work sequence and safety instructions. In addition, any warranty claim against BMW AG is extinguished in the event of improper fitting and handling which diverges from the installation and operating instructions.

Notes on safety

The permitted roof load of 100 kg may not be excee ded. (Weight of both carriers 4.3 kg plus superstructu re plus actual load)

Mounting is to be carried out in accordance with the installation instructions.

Before each journey all screw fittings and connections on the base carrier and superstructure are to be checked to make sure they are firmly seated and should be tightened as necessary.

! It is especially important to check and, if necessary, tighten the screw fittings between roof rack and vehicle roof at regular intervals during longer journeys, at latest every 1,000 km. The screw fittings must be checked in particular on bad stretches of road and checked again every two hours.!

Distribute pieces of luggage evenly, keep the centre of gravity as low as possible and secure transported items with suitable straps to stop them from slipping.

Note that vehicle handling changes according to the load being transported. As far as possible avoid sud den braking, acceleration from rest and fast cornering.

When a load is being transported on the roof, speed has to be adjusted to actual conditions such as state of the roads, road surface, cross-wind conditions, general traffic conditions, etc. We recommend the advisory speed.

The legal regulations for motor vehicle construction and use are to be complied with for roof transportati on.

When not in use, the roof rack carriers should be removed from the vehicle for reasons of fuel economy and the safety of other road users.

Do not go through the car wash with the roof-rack carriers mounted.

General notes

Before mounting the roof rack for the first time a basic adjustment of it must be made in order to match the support feet to the width of the vehicle.

If the mounting is done wrongly, damage to the vehicle roof is possible.

To make the mounting of the roof rack easier, it should be done with the help of another person.

Keep the enclosed “safety pass” with the letter code in a safe place to enable an additional order of the

coded special key to be made at your BMW dealer.

1. Open roof-drain moulding flap

Before the roof rack is mounted, the four flaps in the roof-drain moulding on the vehicle must be opened.

Stick the protective film (1) flat in the rain channel so that the edge standing upright lengthways is also covered.

Note

Care should be taken to see that the protective film is not stuck over the sealed area (2) of the threaded nut.

Note on working method

The best working temperature for protective film lies at over 20°C. If this cannot be complied with, it is recom mended that the roof rack is left on the roof of the vehicle for approximately 24 hours after it has been mounted (see section 7).

4. Use of the special key

F 39 82 167

Roof rack "Profil 2000" BMW 5 Series saloon, touring without rail (E39, E39/2)

The special key has two functions. When the handle is taken off, the offset screw key (2) is used as a hexa gon socket-screw key (Allen key) to tighten the hexa gon socket-screws on the support legs. The offset screw key (2) must be put on the handle (1) and locked into place (see arrow) in order to tighten the coded screws. When the basic adjustment of the car riers has been done, the handle remains mounted on the offset screw key.

Note

The special key also has a positioning aid in the form of an inscribed arrow (3). This arrow also exists on the coded screws. When both arrows are lined up, the special key can be put on the coded screws faultles sly.
