Rear-seat covers "BMW Design" BMW 5 Series touring (E39/2)

If fitting is done in the workshop, the installation instructions are to be handed to the customer.

Safety notes

The fitting of the seat covers is to be executed in accordance with the installation instructions. BMW accepts no liability for damage which occurs as a result of not following the work sequence and safety instructions. In addition, any warranty claim against BMW AG is extinguished in the event of improper fitting and handling which diverges from the installation and operating instructions.

Notes on care

Flocked velour:

The covers should be cleaned only with clear water and a cloth or a brush.

Required tools

  • socket screw key 4.5 mm
  • 3/8″ reversible ratchet with extension
  • 3/8″ hexagon spanner socket SW 17
  • 1/4″ reversible ratchet with extension
  • 1/4″ hexagon spanner socket SW 10
  • flat tip screwdriver
  • phillips screwdriver
  • torque spanner
  • folding stick (enclosed in packaging)

1. Dismantle and cover headrests

Pull all three headrests (1) vigorously upwards in the direction of the arrows out of the seat backs (2).

Pull cover over headrests in such a way that the one­ piece velcro strip (1) is located in the direction of travel. Attach the rubber band (2) tightly and seal the velcro strip (3).

Unclip the covering caps (1) of the rear-seat bench mounting on both sides.

With the aid of a hexagon socket-head screw key, undo the screws (1) of the rear-seat bench mounting (2) on both sides and remove the rear-seat bench mountings (2).

Fold up rear-seat bench (1) and undo screw (2) of the seat belt (3). Draw seat belt (3) through the rear-seat bench.

Take rear-seat bench out of the vehicle.

Note

When the rear seat is later reassembled, the screw of the safety belt must be tightened to 48 Nm.

Pull cover (1) over seat bench (2) and adjust it to the contours. Pull the cover (1) tight on the reverse side of the seat bench (2) and hook it together with the aid of the rubber bands (3). Pull the velcro fasteners (4) through the openings for the seat-belt buckles and seal them.

Note

Care should be taken to see that the support brackets (5) of the seat bench are not hidden by the cover (1).

Undo the lower mounting screws (1) of the side parts (see magnification). Unclip side parts (2) above in direction of arrow and remove them from the vehicle.

Pull cover (1) over side part (2) and adjust it to the contours. Pull cover (1) tight with the aid of the rubber bands (3) and hook it together.

Note

It is essential to make sure that the mounting clasps (4) are not covered by the rubber bands (3) and that when they are reinstalled in the vehicle the upper area of the side parts are inserted into the plastic covering of the belt guide.

4. Dismantle and cover rear-seat back

Fold the 1/3 and 2/3 backrest parts of the rear-seat bench down forwards.

Undo the socket-head screw (1) of the retaining bracket (2) and remove the retaining bracket (2) of the backrest part.

Undo socket-head screw (1) (see magnification) of the centre retaining bracket (2) and remove the retaining bracket.

Remove both backrest parts (3) from the vehicle.

Remove the plastic cover (1) of the centre headrest after having unscrewed the two Phillips screws (2).

Fold out centre armrest (1) and after removing the two Phillips screws (2) remove it.

Put the cover (2) on the disassembled centre armrest (1) and fit it exactly to the contours. Join the velcro strip (3) to the internal fleece material (4). Pull the cover tight and seal it with the aid of the velcro fasteners (5) and (6). Build back the covered centre armrest into the 2/3 backrest part.

Put the cover (2) on the 2/3 backrest part (1) and adjust it to the contours. Pull the cover (2) tight over the reverse side of the 2/3 backrest part (1) and join it up using the velcro strips (3) and the fleece material (4) below and at the side. Push the cover (2) under the plastic cover of the backrest lock (5) using the folding stick supplied.

Note regarding vehicles with skibags

It is essential to make sure that the opening (6) provided in the cover (2) is congruent with the opening in the skibag in the 2/3 backrest part.

Pull the cover (1) tight over the folded-in centre armrest and seal it with the aid of the zip fastener (2) and the velcro fasteners (3). Using the supplied folding stick, push the cover (1) under the plastic cover of the belt (4) and the backrest locking mechanism (4).

Put the cover (2) on the 1/3 backrest part (1) and adjust it to the contours. Pull the cover (2) tight over the reverse side of the 1/3 backrest part (1) and join it up using the velcro strips (3) and the fleece material (4) below and at the side. Using the supplied folding stick push the cover (2) under the plastic cover of the backrest lock (5) and the backrest release located on the front side.

5. Installation notes

Re-install all component parts of the rear seat set in the reverse order of disassembly.

After assembling the rear-seat back (1), it is essential to check that the 1/3 and 2/3 backrest parts are properly locked. The backrests are only correctly locked when the red warning field (see arrow) has disappeared. In addition, the rear-seat bench should be checked to make sure it is correctly mounted.
